USB3 write speeds... are these acceptable??

My HP folio 9470m gets about 30MB/s write speed to various USB3 flash drives. Read speeds are over 100. I ran a USB flash benchmark utility to verify this, although the write speed got worse as the file sizes got smaller (not sure if this is normal).

I had a USB2 external enclosure with a SATA3 drive in it, and I'd get 5MB/s writing to the drive copying large (700MB) files to it. I just bought a USB3 enclosure thinking it would improve and I only get 8MB/s now.

There are no BIOS settings for speed on this laptop.

As far as I know these USB drivers are up to date but I haven't checked them all.

Yes, the laptop has USB3 ports.

Any thoughts?

It is not unusual to see write speeds significantly lower than read especially in lower cost flash drives.
I don't know if what you are seeing in normal or not but most of my lower cost USB 3.0 flash drives yield lower performance in write than you have indicated.

Keep in mind that USB 3.0 is any speed faster than USB 2.0 up to 5.0Gbps. As pointed out by pbcopter, lower cost USB 3.0 devices will be at least a little faster than USB 2.0 but most likely will not reach full USB 3.0 speeds. Also, the USB 3.0 ports on computers may or may not be capable of full USB 3.0 speeds.

The two most understood words; (Up To)

USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 have speeds (Up To). They forget to mention that most likely you will not see those speeds during actual use.

Many things in a computer have (Up To) speeds that most likely you will never see in everyday use.

USB 2.0 is up to 480Mb/s or 60MB/s

USB 3.1 is up to 10G/s or 1.2GB/s

The bottle neck isn't the communication, the bottle neck is the device.
I found this transfer speeds on my computer
- normal flash disk - 5 to 10MB/s
- fast flash disk - 25 to 30MB/s
- SATA 3 disk on a USB 3.0 enclosure - Begins high (150MB/s and stabilize at 35 to 50MB/s)

And it's always the same, doesn't mater if connected to USB 2.0, 3.0 or 3.1.

The speed will only be as fast as the weakest (slowest) link in the chain. Being "USB 3" compatible is no guaranty that you will actually get the maximum quoted USB 3 speed. What is the rated speed of the SATA drive in the enclosure? If it is a mechanical spinner drive it will be the weakest link. And don't assume, just because it is SATA 3 that you will actually get the full SATA 3 Speed out of it. Look up the actual manufacturers specs for that model drive. You may be very surprised at what you see for read write speeds.

Actually, back in 2015, the powers that be changed the USB 3.x classifications. USB 3.0 (up to 5.0 Gbps) is now USB 3.1 Gen 1 and the former USB 3.1 (up to 10Gbps) is now USB 3.1 Gen 2. I have no earthly idea why they made that change; all it has done is create confusion since not all manufacturers are onboard with the new classifications and many are taking advantage of the confusion to mislead people into thinking they are buy a faster device than they actually are.

It might be the flash drive because these speeds are very low for usb3.
