Used Dell Computer. Bargain or something else?

I can buy from a friend a used Dell computer which has been refurbished for $430.00. I probably would put in an SSD. Is this a good deal or something to avoid?


It has Win7 HP but I probably could talk them into Win7 Pro.

Hi Smorton,

It seems a good specification systems. If possible then try to add in a 2 Gb graphic card as I am assuming that you would be using this system primarily for gaming or video extensive applications.

Also, let us know the model number of the system so we can advise you about the maximum capacity of SSD supported by this system.

Dell sells refurbished systems. Check them out. Some of the refurb's are really brand new systems that orders were cancelled. However, look close at their refurb list and exactly what is on or comes with the particular model. Sometimes, Dell will have new PC advertised specials that are near (or even lower) than the refurb's if you are not in a hurry for a new system.

I wouldn't normally recommend a Used computer since you can get decent NEW ones's cheaply enough --however DELL is an exception -- as the previous poster says most of these are usually "Aborted orders" - and Refurbished ones if not aborted orders are totally REBUILT machines so you are probably OK on this one. You will get the same warranty too that a Brand new computer has.

If the Dell is one of the business-oriented models - Optiplex, Dimension, Precision, Vostro, for instance - then I'd buy it without hesitation. It is my personal experience that these models are a cut above the rest, especially where reliability is concerned.

The Dimension line was discontinued about 6 years ago (not too long after Vista came out) and replaced by the Inspiron desktop line. The Vostro line has been recently discontinued. Vostro's were basically "entry level" business systems.

I would not be buying it for gaming because I have never done that.

I don't want to buy it if it is not a read good deal.

I do like a lot of speed with a computer.

It I wanted to get a computer with a state of the art processor such as the Intel i7 4770 K Haswell CPU, is it better to have it built or buy it as part of a Dell, etc. I assume you can't simply combine an Intel i7 4770 K Haswell CPU with a bunch of other components but rather you need a certain motherboard, etc.

DocBrown, I assume you can't make this a part of a bare bones system you mentioned in your reply.

Please forgive in dullness in this post.

Any input is appreciated.

Yes, that is the bare bones i7. You will need a case, PSU, Graphic card, keyboard, Mouse, monitor, etc.
They are not hard to build. Just check out some of the threads here at SF of members that have build
their custom computers. Just think of it as an educational science experiment.

Hi Smorton,

It would depend on the previous experience you have in assembling and disassembling the system. If anyone has assembled couple of desktops earlier it can be done in as low as 30 minutes.

However, if you are completely new at it you might struggle a bit take alot more time. So if you are willing to learn and have time to spare then only go for a custom built system.

Otherwise you can purchase already built desktop which doesn't need to be setup and are easy to use.
