Hey guys, so I want to install Windows 7 on this notebook I have. I backed up all the info I had using the option Windows provided me with, their backup tool on Windows XP.
My question is, will I be able to use this file to restore all of my files on Windows 7?
It says:
"Type of file: Windows Backup File"
"Open with: Windows backup Utility".

I just want to make sure I can use this to restore my personal data after I formatt everything and install W7.

Hello BDani,

MS does have a utility for this
Description of the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2

Read this thread as it sounds like some people have problems with this
Windows 7 restore of XP backup - Microsoft Community

Looking at your specs you have a Win 7 desktop.
You could try installing the utility on the desktop and see if you can read/restore the XP backup file.
That way you would test this before installing Win 7 on the notebook.

If you have problems you could then consider a different approach, perhaps even just copy your XP personal data to the desktop (or external HD) and then copy it back to the notebook after installing Win 7.
