Greetings,

I'm trying to fix my father's stock Dell Inspiron 530S. It has a Pentium Dual CPU E2180 with 2.00 GB RAM running Win7 Pro 64-bit.

It won't log into the only account on the computer - his. So far, I started running sfc /scannow using CMD in administrator mode.

Any suggestions on how to possibly recover or replace the profile with his data? He teaches online, so he needs as much of his profile as possible (he also needs to get an external hard drive for backup, but that's beside the point...*grumble*)

Thanks,

SFC /scannow just completed. It said it found corrupt files and could not fix some of them, and gave a link to the log file. However, I cannot open it up with the temporary profile. I'd attach it to here, but it's also 10.5 MB in size.

Should I proceed with the repair install or the hidden admin?

Run the SFC 3 more times. It fixes only one file at a time, it may work. Then use the reapair. Post back, with any questions or results.

I think you should go with the repair install.

Through forum experience the SFC does work but not as well as the repair install. However, as with everything, you start with the easy solutions first and then escalate. Wish you luck.

Attached is the end of the logfile. I only included it because it showed problems with the repair process.

Is the problem that it is password protected and you dont know what the password is? or will the profile just not load?

There is no password on the profile. Normally, it automatically signs in. I also tried logging out and logging into the user account (which is an admin-level account), and it came back to the temp profile.

From what I can tell of the log (experience level on this is low), it seems like the NlsLexicons001b.dll file is completely corrupt. Not sure if this affects a logon, though.

I'm going to restart again and try it one more time, but I will wait a few minutes in case someone out in the forums says NOOOOOOOOO DON'T DO IT

OK, why not try the repair install? It is usually more effective. I would like to advise, however, that it has always been my policy to warn members to make back ups and system restore points before trying repairs. Although, I am not aware of any lost data using repair install, I thought that it would be lax on my part not to advise, since you probably cannot back up his files.
