I have a computer running Windows 7 (Build 7100). I joined it to my work Domain with no issues. I signed in using my username and password.

I can map network drives and change my settings. Any time I log out or restart my computer all the network settings, desktop settings, mapped drives and files are gone. I have to start over again like its the first time I've ever logged onto the network.

I had this very same problem in Vista and was never able to solve it. This is why my entire workplace is still on XP.

Does anyone have any ideas? I cannot seem to find anything to fix it.

Thanks.

Maybe the domain controller isn't configured properly for Vista and 7? I dunno.

Have you spoken to your I.T. staff at all about this?

Unfortunately, I am the I.T. Staff. I didn't know the DC had to be configured differently to accept Vista or Win7. I will look into that. Thanks for the tip.

when this happened to me, i saw a warning balloon about temporary profiles. Did you see this when it happened?

You're welcome, but I've had 0 exposure to domains and know very little about them. Not even sure this is correct, but doesn't the domain controller hold all the user profiles? If they are stored there, than I guess that's what would have to be checked.

Or maybe something to do with group policies. Again, just complete guesses on my part.

Good luck!

i have seen alot of situations personally while fooling around, that doesnt keep settings saved. This isnt out of the ordinary for this build i have seen. I just havent seen many ppl reporting the fact that this is a bigger issue. Its the "off the beat path" type locations/scenarios/MS apps and settings that are the problem. More common settings seem to save correctly. Would have to go down the list 1 by 1 to correctly identify ones that are being saved and ones that arent, and there are more than just one or two i have seen. In some cases, security file permissions not kept, and specify sharing with a created library and networked folders on a HG. Just off the top of my head. I would have to go thru the scenario previously to give you a more detailed explanation. But its looking widespread as well.

I have the same problem. My domain login to Windows 7 is TEMPORARY.
When I logoff and logon again, all my settings are gone, back to default.
Backgrounds, profile image, even quick launch toolbar is no longer setup.

HOW TO CHANGE from Temporary to permanent? Need it to remember all my settings.

I do know that for where the profiles are kept, a V2 folder is created. So ... if you have a folder used in XP before, make sure to create another folder with the same name as the XP profile folder but with .V2 at the end.

I copied the contents of the previous folder into the V2 folder and it worked.

Someone also mentioned a profile migration tool. Anyone know about that?

Same Problem - No Resolution

I loaded Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Edition on a Dell Precision Mobile 6400 Laptop with 8 Gig Memory. I booted from the CDROM Loaded a Fresh Custom Install with a Format of the drive of Windows 7 and created a Local Profile. I then loaded all the latest dell Drivers for the 6400 including a video driver. I loaded all the Windows extras I needed like IIS and loaded the latest Windows Updates from Microsoft Web Site. I then joined it to our domain which has both Windows Vista and XP Machines on it. Our Domain Controller is Windows 2008 Server Enterprise 64 bit Edition. After Rebooting I logged on to the machine as the Domain Administrator. I made changes to the administrator desktop and logged off and back in. My changes were saved. However, I logged on as Myself with my personal domain account that has Domain Administrator Privileges. I set up my desktop as this is to be my personal laptop. I then logged out and came back in. All my Desktop settings were gone. It was like the first time when you log in for the first time. I tried another users domain admin account and got the same results. I can log on to a Local Account, the Built in Domain Administrator and can make changes to the desktop or themes and they are saved. However, if I use any other Domain Users account it does not save the desktop. I have spent hours on this. I am going to call Microsoft Premier Support. But this is definitely an issue or bug. I have not been able to find any resolution. I wanted to let others know that I had the same issue and to document the symptoms.

Our Network is a Windows Network with a Fiber Connection. Our Firewall is a Cisco ASA 5510. The Servers are all top of the line Dell Servers. Our Domain Controller and secondary DC is a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64 Bit Edtion. We do have some Win 2003 Members Servers. Most of our clients are mostly XP with SP3, but we do have 4 Vista Ultimate machines and 1 Windows 7 Ultimate Machine. My Laptop is the second Windows Ultimate Machine and is the only one with this problem. The other Machine is fine. All our connections are Gigibyte.

Oh our domain controllers are not upgrades from 2003 they were fresh installs of Windows Server 2008 and then profiles were migrated from older Windows 2003 server. But this was over a year ago.

Anything else you might want to know.....

Resolved -

I figured out the problem. Apparently with Windows 7 on a domain if you have any GPOs that fail to run on a new profile being created it will only create a temporary profile.

In our case we have a batch file that runs though GPO that maps network drives. Apparently somebody put an additional line that copies a host file to each local computer. This command was failng for some reason. Because of this it was causing Windows 7 to create a temporary profile instead of a local one.

Batch File

net use v: /delete
net use y: /delete
net use z: /delete
net use v: \\RELIANT\FiveFlags /persistent:yes
net use y: \\RELIANT\Development /persistent:yes
net use z: \\RELIANT\PublicFolders /persistent:yes
Copy \\RELIANT\PublicFolders\Software_Development\Software_Updates\Intranet_Host_Files\hosts %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts /y

The last line was the offending item. It for some reason was causing the failure to create a local profile setting.

Here are two links where otheres experienced the problem I was having.
