Using a 32bit upgrade license with a 64bit disc?

Hey everyone,

I've recently bought two new machines.

One's a Intel Core 2 Quad
The other's an AMD (Sempron?) Triple Core 64bit.

I've ordered the upgrade disks for Windows 7, the...what does Microsoft call it? Up to date program or whatever it is. The one for the AMD machine has come and the disk specifies it has only 32bit software on it, but has a standard Microsoft License key on the back. My father has a retail 32/64bit Windows 7 disk set for the same version of Windows 7.

Does anyone know through experience if I would be able to use his 64 bit disk to install and use my license key to activate it? I know it sounds an odd set up but to be honest it all seems to point that it's possible, what with Microsoft shipping the two disks together normally. Anyone got any htoughts?

Sorry but i don't think that's possible...

If i'm not mistaken your dad already used the license key to activate his retail 32bit right?
And i think what you have is a Windows 7 "UPDATE" cd ;)

You can use a key for 32 or 64 bit. One OS on one machine at a time.

Every time you attempt an install, always back up. Good advice for programs and tweaks, too.

Maybe I should clarify.

My dad bought retail upgrade. 1 license code and 2 discs. Used the code and 64 bit disk.

I've bought the £9.99 upgrade disk from the manufacturer that comes with 32 bit software and a license code. Will my license code work with my dads disk?

Is your Dad's 64 bit installer the same version as what you are entitled to with your license key?

If not, you can unlock all versions in the 64 bit installer by extracting files to the desktop, deleting ei.cfg from Sources folder, then recompiling into ISO to burn to DVD. Use ImgBurn at 4x with verify.

Here is the way to recompile the ISO after unlocking all versions: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/32055-bootable-iso-create-installation-files.html

Now boot from your new DVD, select the version you own, then Custom Install, use Drive tools to delete all partitions, create new as you wish, then format before installing Win7 to first partition. The DVD will scan your HD to see another OS and allow Upgrade key. If not, wait until after install to insert key at Computer>Properties.
