Using ASIO Drivers w/Conventional Win7 Apps

I'm going to an online class that uses GoTo Meeting, and I've not been able to use my nice studio mic even when I use my XLR to mini plug cable into my MOBO soundcard chip front panel mic In. The soundcard app recognizes that I'm using the front panel Mic Input, and I've tried all 3 mic types that Windows offers and still no sound. My 1st best guess is the GoTo Meeting app doesn't recognize my ASIO driver, but that only applies if I'm using my nice external ASIO-equipped mixing device. But if I'm using the onboard chip I don't understand why it won't listen to my mic.

Any clues here?

I suspect the XLR to mini may be part of it. With the XLR there are two "hot" connections and one Ground. In a computer TRS plug, the Tip only is hot. The Ring is for +5VDC that computer mics use and the Sleeve is ground. I haven't researched how a cable without any transformer, etc. works.


If the mic you have needs Phantom Power, the +5VDC available on the ring may not be enough since phantom power is +48VDC (something less than 48VDC will power most condenser mic's).

Another issue, many applications default to "Stereo Mix" as the audio source. Make sure you have Stereo Mix set as the Default RECORDING device.

Just guessing on some possibilities. I have a recording studio. The Alesis I/O 26 was my first interface unit. I've moved on and currently have an MOTU 896Mk3 Hybrid (and Cakewalk Sonar and Studio One 3 DAW software).

Thanks. I too have an Alesis I/O 26 This mic Audio Technica 3035 is indeed a phantom-powered mic. However, why doesn't the PC convert f'wire signal to some conventional signal?

My firewire connected MOTU 896Mk3 Hybrid recording interface unit is listed in the Sound Panel Recording section. I have Stereo Mix set as default. Any program that uses Stereo Mix would be able to see a mic plugged into a channel on the MOTU.

However, I had a lot of different problems with the I/O 26 and recording and the reason I dumped it and replaced it with a different unit.
