Using drivers straight from Nvidia on Dell PC

Is it ok to use drivers direct from Nvidia for my GPU instead of from the Dell website? Does it matter? Is it possible there could be a driver that is incompatible with my computer? My GPU is GTX 745 (OEM only)

Generally you should stick with drivers from the OEM, in your case Dell. These systems often use customized hardware that may not be fully compatible with the generic drivers supplied by device manufacturers like Nvidia or Intel. Intel warns about this issue on their website.

It's a desktop, the XPS 8700.

Well, so far, my current driver which is from Nvidia and not from Dell, is working fine. Even GeForce Experience seems to work. I used to update drivers with GeForce Experience but not anymore since now I know it is not always good to update drivers unless I have to.

No problems currently, just wondering if it is risky to use drivers straight from Nvidia.

@Everyone The odd thing is that the Dell website doesn't even have drivers for my GPU in my XPS. They have a driver for GTX 645 but not GTX 745 which is what I have. In fact, their drivers are for 600 Series even though their current XPS 8700 configs all have a 700 Series Nvidia GPU.

i see it on dells site second driver down on list under video for the xps 8700 but shouldn't matter anyways since you got it from nvidia

When it is based on fact, all opinions will coincide. So collecting for more opinions is meaningless.

Dell does not make a graphics chip. It is nvidia's product, and nvidia's driver is always the right driver.

As Derek said, this is a different story for a laptop, it is really different, as long as the OEM's craps are present there.
