Solved Using Maplin's USB file Transfer Adapter/Dongle

Hello All... Got a new computer which uses Win7 (Home Premium 64bit)

So gone and bought an High Speed USB File Transfer Adapter for moving files accross from XP, Win7,Win8, Vista, so it says on the box!?.. anyone used this gizmo, cos not sure which computer to plug the dongle end into first.... old XP or new Win7 computer.

Reading the blirb for using the Windows Easy Transfer I could use my Sky Sagen DG934G router, not sure how to connect to router, am I correct in thinking I run an extra Cat5 cable to/from Win7 computer to router sockets,

Not yet fired up my new computer (Sky Internet connection not working) but again reading internet blirb it has W.E.T allready loaded..that right?.

So in a a fewer steps as possible, Please, what next

Q... please what would be the best method, the Maplin or W.E.T method

I'd not use any program to move files, just copy your User folders intact to the stick and confirm everything was copied. We see too many cases where data is lost trying to use a file transfer program, which doesn't work any better than manual copy and paste but does include App Data settings which are a corruption path into a fresh new install.

The more you stick with the steps, tools and methods in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 the more perfect your install will be.

Morning gregrocker... I think I understand what your getting at when we use an App such as W.E.T. It could kinda adapt/fiddle with the transfering info, to streamline the move !!? Yep I can go along with that.
But I have 42GB in 'My Documents', 6,800 files, 317 folders, surely I'm gonna mess-up with a manual transfer using a 16GB stick and am not really sure where to locate them all in Win7.

I've fired up my new Win7 computer, so do I just drag and drop from me stick in bunches of 16GB to the My Doc's, that seems quite easy even for me.

But then we come to my XP Outlook Express and configuring WLM as an email client ( if thats the terminology!!?? )...''we shall overcome'' eventually

First, you'll do yourself a real favor by sorting everything into the proper User folder under your active User name account, and cleaning those folders out by deleting what's no longer needed. Your User folder should be the one at the top right of your Start menu.

Then you may only have 16gb in each to fit onto stick for transfer.

But if you have the old and new PC's in the same location, why not transfer over network?

Connect both PC's to network.

In Network and Sharing center, under Change Advanced Sharing Options, check Turn on Network Discovery, Turn on File and Printer Sharing, and Turn off Password sharing. Then click on Homegroup and copy down the HomeGroup Password, tick all boxes to share.

Now go to other PC and make the same changes, in Control Panel>Homegroup look for invitation to join the other PC's Homegroup at top, insert it's Homegroup Password. Select all boxes to share.

This should allow you to open any User folder, from Organize tab "Select All", drag the group to the other PC under Homegroup, let it expand to show that User folder, position your mouse on the target folder until it confirms the correct copy location, and only then release the left click to drop the files there.

For Downloads folder and some other User folders not pre-selected for Homegroup sharing you'll only need to rightclick on both PC's to Share>with Homegroup to get them to show up in Homegroup explorer.

Try this to Import Mail/ Settings - Outlook Express to Windows Live.
There are other tutorials available for any such migration by just asking Google specifically.

Did as you said, cleaned up 'My Doc' file found a 36GB BackUp file so was able to fit every thing on my 16GB stick, all went smoothly. Am well pleased... thanks Joe

Now having trouble moving my 'Favourites'... will start another tread
