The RC is Ultimate 32bit. Am I limited to which Windows 7 I can install? I found a listing on eBay for the Home Premium 64 bit and it says "This upgrade is for machines running 64 bit versions of Vista ONLY".

Is this true? According to the chart Official Windows 7 upgrade chart is ridiculous -- Engadget I can go from Ultimate 32 to Home Premium 64.

Thanks!

To go from 32bit to 64bit, you have to do a clean install. It is doable with the upgrade disk though.

That sounds like an OEM version, because it only speaks of x64, not both x32 & x64. If that be the case, I would recommend getting a regular upgrade. The OEM is a disposable OS, because it can only be installed on one machine, and may still become unusable if you ever change certain components.

You can't upgrade from RC to a retail version without doing some things so the installer will allow it. It is not a supported upgrade path.

I would strongly recommend that you save any data you want to keep then do a clean install (with format). Doing that will allow you to go from RC1 32bit to and version of Win 7, 32 or 64 bit.

I went from RC1 32 bit to Pro 64 bit. Had a few minor problems but it's now working very well.

+1. Back up your files, gather your installers, boot from the DVD, use Advanced drive tools to format first.

The DVD will see the RC and allow use of Upgrade. You need to have XP/Vista on hand to qualify, tho.
