Using system drive data as a data drive on seperate machine

Hello peeps...

I have a system drive on a workstation which is 1) removable, 2) contains 2 partitions - one for the sytem & data files, one reserved by the os.

I would like to use this drive and it's file data in an external drive case (SATA) connected to my notebook.

Is this possible? Will the notebook handle the external drive properly?

It shouldn't be a problem, the notebook should see the drive as secondary. Can't hurt to create a System Resore or image the system first, though:

That didn't seem to go very well...

The notebook saw the drive, labelled it 'G'.
I was able to access data files.
Every data file that was written back to is now corrupted.
When I placed the drive back into the workstation bay and booted, I was prompted for a 'chkdsk'.

Now what!?

Perform the disk check (chkdsk) as per this link:

Also, don't know how much data is on the drive, but you may want to copy the drive contents to the workstation or create a system restore point for the data drive just to cover the bases:

Post back and let us know how you made out. If more help is necessary, filling out your system specs and posting information on the drive in question will be helpful, including system OS's, drive file system, etc.

I copied back the 6-7 data files that were corrupted from the backup set I made before the 'experiment'.

The question is... still kind of the original question...

Yes. I wouldn't have expected any issues. But to clarify, from the title of the post, I assume that you're not attempting to use this drive to boot drive for the notebook, are you? Second drive only?

The controller may be an issue, but without more info regarding the drive (ie, file system, model, enclosure...), we can't really rule out other issues. Have you tried googling for info, reading user reviews (if available), checking the mfr forum (if available) to see if this problem is a known issue with the enclosure? It might also help to give the mfr tech support line a call.

Yes, this is my next plan of action...

I will create a 'data' partition on the workstation drive.
I will copy over a small set of work files.
I will try to use these file much like i had done originally.

If I now get corruption, I'm leaning towards a bad drive case controller or driver....
I may even try one of my spare drives, which won't have a sytem or 'reserved' partition on it.
