Hello,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ4000 with a GeForce 8400M GT, running Windows 7 32bits version.
I am trying (for years now) to update the video driver to a newer version, but its almost impossible.

Until now, the old (modded) 185.85 NVidia driver did a good job running most of the games, but now its a bit too outdated and everything i try to install and run just doesn't work because of the video driver.

I have tried almost everything and i am seriously thinking to buy a new laptop (and it wont be a Vaio).

I`d really appreciate any help that could show me a light in the end of the tunnel.

Thanks,
Adriano

As you have discovered Sony likes to go out of their way to lock you in to only getting support from them for no other reason that they can. There isn't anything any different in their computers than anyone else's, just that they use different DevID's (and who knows what else) for the hardware so that the manufacturer's drivers won't install without being modded in some way.

Now with that said have you tried the pre-modded drivers from here,

Yeah, i found out that in the worst possible way... and the worst is that they don't give you any support! I mean, the only available driver there is a message saying that Windows should provide the drivers for that video card... Its ridiculous..

Anyway, Ive already tried drivers from laptopvideo2go.com, but not the newest version. Will try and let you now. And by the way, should I download the driver or the .inf, or both? what should I do with the .inf?

As I expected, the modded driver didn't worked... It failed right at the system verification. Translating from portuguese "This graphic driver did not found any compatible graphic hardware".

Should I use the .inf as well? How?

Sorry if this is basic stuff, but this driver thing just scares me... im traumatized since win 95... lol!

EDIT:

I manually pasted the .inf file inside the Display.Driver folder, and tried to run setup again. This time it passed the System Verification, but it failed at the installation. It just stopped installing and showed a "failed" status next to the graphic driver.

What next?

After extracting the driver file inside that is a folder called "Display.Driver", paste the INF in there and replace the existing one with it.

After pasting and replacing the inf file, it failed at the system verification, saying that a required file was missing.

My last shot will be to contact the guys on laptopvideo2go.com...

Thanks a lot so far
