Solved Validation Question

Hi guys,

Our company has purchased a number of new PC's, Lenovo all in ones. They come with Windows 7 Professional installed. Currently I am trying to update two of them, I haven't unpacked the others yet, and am having trouble doing the Windows Update.

This is what happens;

I check for updates, they are found, downloaded and installed. When the machine is rebooted it does the final stages of the configuration then fails and undoes what it has just installed.
I have had to resort to installing each of the failed updates manually. In doing so I have come across a number of updates that require the genuine validation to be run and it gives me a generated key to insert into a box before I can continue with the installation.
Is this a dodgy copy of Windows or is there something else going on?

There's no obvious problem in the report - what happens if you attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer?

The 'repeating update' issue is possibly totally unrelated - Windows updates won't download any validation-disallowed update, so it shouldn't be attempting to install any either.

Hey Noel,

I tried that and didn't come up with anything at all, it just did its thing and then went to a Microsoft advertisement page.

I installed roughly 90% of the patches manually and then did the auto update from the Windows Update screen and all worked. Even though I got it working in the end I don't relish the idea of having to manually install close to a hundred updates on 5 machines. :shock:

If you read the small print on the advert, it says " because your Windows is Genuine...."

What I usually do in cases like that is install in batches - holding all .NET updates until last.

I haven't done that before. Is that a feature under the manual install?

With Windows Updates open, first set it to download but NOT install. Then do a manual check for Updates to populate the list - then click on 'choose updates to install' and UNcheck everything.
Then put ticks in the oldest 10 updates (excluding .NET) and click OK, then Install - come back an hour later and they should be waiting for a reboot.
Rinse and repeat until you only have .NET updates left - install those two or three at a time (not more!), working from the oldest to the newest.
It's a pain, but it avoids all sorts of hassles.
Any more than 5 identical machines, and it will be worth looking at using SysPrep (but someone else would have to advise you about that).

Just letting you know it worked a treat. I unticked all the .NET updates and installed the others as you said. Followed this up with the installation of the .NET updates and the machine is all patched.
