The one thing you might want to look more into is the ram only being 768, I wouldnt try to run it on anything less then one gig. but thats me. Im sure the "Doc" will come by and point you in a much better direction then me being he has been playing with Win 7 and getting it to run on the lowest hardware he can.

I would try it first with the available RAM. My Win7 runs in 460MBs right now. Since your Mum will probably be mostly on the internet, it might very well work.

I think it should be fine though.

~Lordbob

I agree with LordBob. While it won't break any records in the Windows Experience Index it should run Win7.

One of my old Toshiba laptops is a P3 with about that much RAM, and it runs Win7.

Bottom line - if it can run XP, it can run Win7.

P.S. - You're a good kid to help out your mum as much as you can. :)

As said if just browsing the web, and playing poker and stuff would be ok with 768mb of ram.

A few days ago I installed windows 7 x64 on an AMD sempron 1.8ghz with only 512mb of ram, it runs aero fairly ok. MY bro also does only web browsing, some office (word, power point), a little bit of chatting (windows live messenger) and some music.

should be ok!

Your moms laptop should run just fine with Win7 installed. I have it installed on a Dell C600 PIII (700 MHz bat/1.0 GHz AC), 512 ram (maxed out) and 60 GB drive (5400 rpm), No AREO of course but can't have everything (I do plan to try "True Transparency" on it as someone says it will work, can only try). I find it faster and more responsive than it was with XP pro on it.

GO FOR IT.

My downstairs Win 7 P4 pc only has 768 MB RDRAM and I do all sorts of stuff on it like audio editing and encoding, ripping vidz etc... Stuff you always hear that you need 8 million GB of memory for lol. Yes high amounts of memory helps but is nowhere near the necessity it is made out to be.

Further, about the machine in my specs. I recently went from 1 GB to 2 GB DDR performance memory and noticed no difference whatsoever in system responsiveness or speed. It was great to begin with. I play many games on it, do heavy audio video encoding and editing, have many background apps and servers running. 1 GB was definitely sufficient before but I do like having 2 GB now.

Moral of the story: Memory amount is not as important as it is claimed to be. Going from 768 MB to 1 GB or from 512 to 768 or 1 GB would be a significant jump. The downstairs pc I mentioned had 512 and was sluggish. I upped it to 768 (RDRAM ugh) and it is so much faster in doing everyday things like even browsing Windows Explorer. Anything over 1 GB (for x86) is making your PC extra nice from that point on.

Basicaly most of the recomended specs for Win7 is there to get your PC ready for anything that you would add on later or if you do decide to run more software that requires more computing power.;)

Your mom is like mine too she basically just does email and a few simple online games that don't require too much graphics and yahoo messenger. She also found the Win7 environment nice to look at. As for me i'm upgrading her to Win7 for the homegroup feature so it would be easy to pass documents and data around from our computers.
