very confusing...and a little worrying...BSOD

Hi folks

I know there's been afew similar posts about this sort of thing but I wanted to keep those unclutered so made my own post - hope that was ok.

Anyway, since yesterday I've had 3 BSOD's appear - all were during playing SW:The Old Republic - the BSOD would appear - I would see it with some figures running at the bottom (now sure what that was for...memory dump?!) and then it'd reboot. I've run check disk and nothing turned up so I'm hoping this might be a driver issue. I'm running a GTX 580 on Windows 64Bit Home (Premium I think) - not had this happen before. I am running the game in windowed mode so I can keep an eye on system settings like cpu/gpu temp, but I don't think that's it. What I did manage to write down is the following when it rebooted:

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

One thing jumps pout at me. RTCore64.sys is installed and loaded. It has known problems with win 7 and needs to be removed.

I do notice Symantec which is a frequent cause of BSOD's. I would remove and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST

Ok - I've never had issues with Norton before - used it for years but I'll give it a go. How good is the Microsoft antivirus thing?

I've deleted MSI Afterburner (after a quick search this seemed to be what that RTCore is referring to) and it seems some folks have suggested installing it to a different directory on my system - that's what they did atleast - I was using it on the odd occasion to control the fan speed or atleast just display the running temps, gpu usage and fan speeds. It was the best thing I could find to do this but if I have to delete it so be it. Do you know of anything else I can use to run processess like this?

From a strictly BSOD perspective MSE causes the least. For a lightweight malware app it isnt bad.

You might be able to run Norton with MSI gone but only trial will tell.
