I thought the RC Was supposed to expire some time ago, and I just booted it up to see what it would do, but everything is still normal. I can still run everything normally and the only thing I have seen was a quick Windows box that said "you might be a victim of software counterfeiting", but I was able to click out of that right away. I didn't know that "expires" means still 99% usable, LOL!

No sorry.
They are warning you. It will become less and less usable over time. Get a copy and validate, before you lose everything

You lost some function this month, next month a little more. You will not get updates. Finally you will lose everything. Don't you think the brains at MS know that people will not pay if they only lose a little. They will lose it all. Your personal doucments may even be lost.

Then there will be the fun that you will just begin to shut down at random. Just when you are having a great chat on messenger or playing a great game, bang, shut down.

I've seen it reported on other forums that it will shut down every 2 hours. My question is, given how stable and good Windows 7 is...why would you still want to be running beta (aka, not final) code? You've missed out on a bunch of deals to get Windows 7 cheap. Do yourself a favor and get a license. No worries about timing out or missing updates.

But I thought that was supposed to start in April or something already...

Yep.

Haven't really noticed much of that to be honest. Was it real? What about the "daily reminders" to upgrade that I haven't been getting?

If you really want to have Windows 7, you will be buying it soon. MS knows exactly what is happening. I think they want you to get use to it and enjoy it, then take it away.

RELEASE CANDIDATE ODDITIES Reply

I didn't see the official link posted, so here it is...the when and the what:

Description of Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) expiration dates and functionality

And that's the funny part. Not one of these has happened to me yet:

Windows 7 RC expiration functionality

Effective February 15, 2010, the expiration notification process begins:
  • Windows 7 RC users receive an expiration notification in the task bar one time per day.
  • Windows 7 RC users are presented with the Notification Wizard one time every four hours and then one time every hour.
Effective March 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC enters the next phase of expiration:
  • Expiration notifications in the task bar continue.
  • Computers that are running Windows 7 RC restart every two hours.

Important When the computer restarts, your work will not be saved.
Effective June 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC expires:
  • Windows starts to a black desktop.
  • Computers that are running Windows 7 RC restart every two hours.

The only thing that actually happened from that list would be the part about "not genuine" and possibly dangerous and all that. Nothing else that bad.
I mean, I'm just test running this to see what will happen. Does it ever actually reach a point (beside windows update) where you actually can't use it?

Yes, it will. I'll give you two reasons why I'd make a change right away, to a previous OS or to a legit, final build of Windows 7.

1. Now that the date has passed, your system is on borrowed time, meaning it could become start showing those signs at anytime, without warning.
2. Why would you consider running on RC (still beta, technically), instead of the finalized, official code? I don't get the need/desire to cling to RC code.

A friend also has the same functionality on his RC. No Black desktop, no restart, only warning about not genuine Windows.

Update us if you continue to use RC...as I am curious also what will actually happen. Back up your files though.

Yep, that's not exactly in the budget right now. Besides, its a funny experiment. I'm gonna laugh if we come back here a year later, the RC still works, and you guys are still desperately still trying to get me to switch.

Does it ever actually reach a point (beside windows update) where you actually can't use it?
Yes, it will. I'll give you two reasons why I'd make a change right away, to a previous OS or to a legit, final build of Windows 7.

1: Why didn't it show these "apocalyptic signs" before?
2: Well, because it is funny, and I want to see what will happen. It is still pretty darn close to the build 7600, and in fact, if I still know how to subtract, RC is only five hundred builds behind (7100).

A friend also has the same functionality on his RC. No Black desktop, no restart, only warning about not genuine Windows.

Update us if you continue to use RC...as I am curious also what will actually happen. Back up your files though.

Oh, I don't use it as a serious OS with a ton of files and stuff on the RC. In the extremely unlikely event that one day it just decided, "hey I'm going to corrupt your entire windows 7 hard drive partition and make you loose everying", it wouldn't really matter, because most of the stuff I use on this (shared) computer are on a different partition of hard drive. Glad to see I'm not the only one with a "working rc". LOL!

Well, I guess nobody really stuck with the RC that long to tell you what and when really happens with it. Usually people want a reliably working computer, so once the final version was out, everyone grabbed a copy. At the same time, Microsoft promised that the RC will stop working. Hence all the advice you're getting here.

I think I will be interested to know what happens to your RC, so please keep us posted with your experience. At the same time, I hope you do have a real OS for your real work.
