Very long wait time after booting into windows

I've executed sfc / scannow and it says there are errors it cannot fix and shows that it has provided a log that contains this:

So what happens is that when windows loads up and Im presented with my desktop the harddrive LED lights up and says lit for like 10mins before I can start using my computer, its like trying to read something that it cant so Im guessing its the files above, is there a way that I can perform a total system repair w/o having to reinstall everything or losing my data? My windows 7 installer dvd is the very first one that came out, no SP1 included but I have it downloaded already.. or is there an easier way ?

EDIT:

To add im currently running a disk scan from a software called Active@ harddrive monitor and it shows I have a 'bad block' at the beginning of my drive.. is there a software that can permanently mark this bad block if its not repairable?

Hi Earl,

Running a chkdsk /R will mark the sector such that it will not have data written to it.

Often, running sfc /scannow multiple times (try 3 times) will sometimes fix errors previously reported as not being able to be corrected.

Hi earl,

I would recommend running the chkdsk, and then attempting the sfc/ scannow. If that doesn't do the trick, a Repair Install from the DVD might also do the trick.

repairing from the DVD only gives me an option to fix boot related issues or perform a system restore.. I kinda want to perform a system reinstall w/o the need to reinstall all of my programs or wipe my data. Dont have the time as of now. I'll try to reboot and see if the added delay is still there, it just finished the chkdsk /r and it did find a few bad blocks, I dont know if those are permanently damaged blocks or it can be fixed by a low level format. It was 8KB worth of bad sectors.

I still have an extended boot delay but its not reaching into the 10mins mark, more like 2mins.. I may need to reformat my drive and install Win7 again, is there a specific method best used for this issue.. assumed that those bad sectors are actual physical damage on the disk, i want those to be permanently marked out.

Although you may have success scanning the drive with a drive scan tool from the manufacturer, which can lock out bad sectors, it's never recommended to continue using that drive because of the increased risk of failure. I would buy a new drive and replace it as soon as possible.

I will send the drive for RMA but theres been a shortage of stocks for samsung in my place, I might need to wait for as long as 5 months to have this replaced.. gonna use it for now since I have 2 more years left of warranty. Thanks for all the help!

Hi EarlZ,

When you perform a fresh install, do the following:

1. Run a chkdsk /R using your existing installation.
2. Now perform a fresh installation of Windows, choosing to format the disk.

The bad sectors would have been marked in step 1, and the installation that you perform in step 2 will not write to those sectors.

Longer term, a disk replacement is the better option.

Have you run the manufacturer's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan? I would run this in addition to Disk Check.
