Solved Very loose SATA connection on 840 Pro

Doing some rearranging and reseating for sake of troubleshooting my BSOD issue and I ended up moving my SSDs to where the regular drive bays are instead of on the back slides of the case. I hadn't noticed this before since all the sata connectors for these two drives would push up against the case a bit. Now that the drives aren't up against anything, I could literally flick or swipe the sata cord loose from my 840 Pro. (A loud fan might even knock it out after a while). My 840 Evo doesn't have this issue, as the plastic molding extends and seats the sata clips well enough. The Pro seems to be missing this in its design. (Maybe I got the wrong version?)

Anyone run into this or have solutions other than slapping it back where it was? I tried all the cords I have and they're all the same fit.

I have an 840 EVO and an 850 EVO installed in my system. I don't notice the connectors being loose or any different from the 1TB Hard drive that is also installed. My SATA data cables have a spring loaded clip that must be depressed to remove the connector from a drive.

Ken if it is just the cable mate then just renew it - it should be quite a firm fit.

Most of my cables do have clips and they fit my Evo perfectly fine. I can see under the lip of the Pro that there's little scrape marks where the clip barely touches--on my Evo there's molded plastic there to make the clips fit. I looked up an image on amazon to make sure mine wasn't broken or missing, and it's exactly like the pictures.

I looked up the 850 Pro too and it's just like the Evo I have. The black trim near the connectors. To reiterate, the 840 Pro does not have this. And I'm not sure why not, as it's amazingly loose with all my cables.

Oh well. I'll think of something. Maybe stick an old cheeto in the space. Not too ghetto of a solution.

Could it be a problem with the 840EVO that you have? since mine is not loose or ill fitting.

Again, the 840 Evo is fine, it's the 840 Pro that has the issue.

The clipless cable that connects to my 840 Pro fits snuggly and has been doing so for two years. Some brands SATA cables tend to fit a bit on the loose side.

As firebird says mate I have four 840's amongst the other s and all are a snug fit I think you have a drive there that has been missed when it is checked by the factory - just get it replaced - or keeps it an use it as an external or seconds drive
My solution would be to fit the cable and then stick a tiny bit of that cloth duct tape to hold it in that would also hold the contacts in place no quite aesthetic but works.

Take a look at the first illustration in post #6 in this thread to see how I dealt with a loose SATA connection due a loose SATA cable connector. It would be a bit trickier with an SSD but it should still be doable.

I ended up fixing this by lucky accident.

I bought a new mobo/cpu today and got a sata power splitter for my two SSDs. I didn't plan this, but the new connector is bigger than standard ones, so any regular sata data connector that can fit, fits pretty tightly now.
