Have just put in a D-Link adapter card to one of the XP machines it works fine but I cannot work out what the small three pin lead that came with it - is for as there is no reference to it in the instructions.
Sorry have no experience with these things much at all except that I had to fit a TP-Link adapter card to my SB build because to mobo ethernet socket would not hook me up to my router / modem.

"Older motherboards must have a WAKEUP-LINK header onboard connected to the network card via a special 3-pin cable; however, systems supporting the PCI 2.2 standard and with a PCI 2.2 compliant network adapter card do not usually require a Wake-on-LAN cable as the required standby power is relayed through the PCI bus."
Thanks TVeblen and bassfisher Got the gist of the and yep thats the puppy in the pic TV and bassfisher the card is a D-Link DFE-530TX Fast Ethernet PCI desktop adapter.
Things working ok just that I found this cable plugged it into the card but there was no where on the board to connect, as I thought it had some sort of function. I think what threw me was there was no instructions / diagrams in the box.
So as the board is dated 2004 wonder why the connection isn't there or would it be that you mean boards older than that?
As for the ethernet socket my H67 board not working that is a mystery as it's brand new. But the TP-Link card has fixed it so well left alone I reckon.

The MB would not have a header for that cable because it does not need it.
The NIC was probably made while there were still 1990's vintage boards still in wide use. And it obviously came from a system that needed it. Yours does not.
As for the Ethernet connection on the H67 - check in the BIOS to be sure the LAN controller is enabled.

Thanks TVeblen Gosh that old???? Heres me thinking 2004 was old - probably cos I am myself and silly lolzzzz!
Ok I'll check the BIOS on the board for the LAN connection.
It is my first build and am still attempting to catch up with BIOS settings ie. I thought one just put it altogether - switched and it all works - until I found I found out about needing to set it to AHCI, plus a few other little things.
Still again thanks for the heads up

TVeblen -Have just checked my BIOS settings and in the CMOS section the H/W 1394 and H/W LAN are enabled the Smart I don't even know what it is referring to and LAN boot is disabled.
Have Googled for answers but they all come up with weird stuff that I have no idea of the meanings - am just a no brainer when it comes to this stuff.

But that SMART setting is new to me. It seems to be a Gigabyte thing and it may be the cause of your problem. You may want to try setting that to Disabled and test. There may be an issue with Gigabyte's driver and that SMART setting.
Thanks TV I'll take a look at that forum and then go back and check that Smart set up.
When I opened it yesterday it looked as if it had sections from memory and I might just Google it to see what it is.
Hmmmm after looking at that forum article - might leave well alone as I am not at all savvy with this stuff and a Google came up with this -mind you it is dated 2009 it could well have changed since then.

hanks TV that sort of explains a bit eh? Might ave a look see again later and just se what it does offer.
Am just wondering what sort of power savings these settings involve - is it in purely the power that the switch or machine is using hmmmmm must have a Google and find out.
Anyway thnaks again it does sort of make a bit more sense pity the Gigabyte prople didn't make it a tad less tech for no brainers like myself.
