Thanks for the speedy reply, so you recon its probably a service like a antivirus etc thats causing this?
I have a few applications isnstalled and the one that was taking ages to install was visual studio 2008 (I am starting to learn to program thus the new computer etc) and it has taken literal hours to install and didnt work comming off the disk either :(
Also installing updates at shutdown was taking literal hours :(

Hi Ben,

Without seeing the computer, I have to work logically. The most likely cause of the problem is a conflict. Any programs that are running at boot, should be turned off.

If that does not work, try the clean boot. If the computer works correctly with the clean boot, you can follow the instructions to determine the cause and correct it.

Many times it is the antivirus that is causing the problem.

Just a shot in the dark, but obviously if you are installing from a CD or DVD drive, there could be a problem with the drive (either a mechanical problem or a configuration or driver problem).

Hey again
I have tried a clean boot and it appeared that applications were working a bit better if it is the case of the anti virus could someone please suggest a good one for win 7 64bit?
But it did still decide when I went to shut down that it said "Preparing to configure windows" and then between 6 and 8 hours later it was done...
is this just something windows does now rather than sitting there informing me its installing updates??
Thanks for all your help guys you have put my mind at rest :)

Hi
I am back again :(
I have managed to get a bundle more problems!
Here is the situation: I am running a clean boot, windows is up to date apart from one update and the only appliccation installed is office 2007
First issue is that when I try to install any app (current test app AVG 64bit for windows 7) the install screens going through are fine but once the install starts it just hangs and doesnt do anything.
I am having issues getting windows defender to update and it also wont start
UAC stopped displaying the message when I tried to do thigns (now turned off) it was starting the background process but no mesasge was displayed on screen.
SFC /scannow wont work normally only in safe mode and still hangs after reaching 100% and wont reach the next line.
Had loads of issues with other updates but they are done now at least.
Has anyone got any thoughts of where I could start to try and resolve this ( i think it all stems from the UAC issue but I could be really wrong) or is it just a good idea to give up and start again??
Cheers Ben

If you haven't already, I would suggest to run MalwareByte's AntiMalware to rule out any 3rd party malware interference. Then if your system is clean, you might want to run a hardware diagnostics tool like BurnInTest (link below) to make sure your hardware is good (RAM, etc). If nothing else, back up your stuff and do a clean install of Windows again (there's a chance that wouldn't fix it, but more times than not it does).
