VGi problem, tv,windows, 7 help please!!!!!!!

I have a 32 inch tv 1080p and im trying to run my computer on the tv and the resolution is stuck at 640x480, and i cant change it or it will not give me the drop down bar ... i have an hdmi cord attached to a vgi converter and its a new computer..and the graphics card is up to date i have made sure someone please help...this ressolution sucks and i need it changed...

whats the maximum output if the VGA convertor? VGA itself is 800x600, but theres many sub VGA's such as sub ect.. and increasing in res size.
