hey first let me say welcome to sevenforums. there are a ton of resources here to help you. I assume you tried via's web site for a vista driver which would work and you could give us some more details on your system (like 32bit or 64, ram, etc)

hope we can help
Ken

Well the 650a drivers don't work. that is for x64. I noticed when installing Vista 64bit drives the install was installing from x86 directories HD Deck does not run after install and a reboot. Go to control panel sound and only thing list is speakers setting when you try and configure 5.1 in my case I get format is not supported by device error. However if I uninstall the driver, and roll it back todriver that installed when I installed Windows 7 7100 I can configure to use speakers 5.1 setting. Just no Spdif setting a HDMI setting is there but only list 2 speakers no support for 5.1 or 7.1. I have a Asus M3A78 MB with 9950 Qaud core 4 GB Ram 3X250 Seagate Sata II HD's running Raid 0 3850 ATI Graphics Card. And just to let you know I have tried the 690a driver from Asus's site with same result Never have been impressed with VIA audio since I owned this MB. Even under Vista Ultimate 32 bit drivers and software seems quirky and very hard to get setup properly especially when tring to use 5.1 either speaker or spdif.
Willing to try more things if someone has other idea to try but for now I'm rolling back to driver that installed when I install Windows 7. Oh and this is my second go around with Windows 7 first time was w x86 32-bit version and had alot more driver issues with it, But with current version all drivers installed except VIA audio w Windows update. Just wish I could get spdif to work cause I wand Dolby, Prologic Sound. Logitech Z5500 Speakers.

Via Audio Drivers 64-bit

Update on My system from Previous post. I did get the Via audio driver for 64 bit to install. But!!! This is what I found on my system in device manager. High Def Audio device was already installed with ATI HDMI Driver, and one High Def Audio was left and would give 6 channel direct sound if I installed VIA driver the devices would change to ATI HDMI Audio and VIA High Def Audio. But 6 channel direct would not work also HD Deck never loads.
Uninstalled all audio devices plus deleted drivers with device manager of course rebooted after booting Checked Device manager to make sure only two High Def Audio devices listed. Then ran VIA 650a driver setup and now I have Via High Def Audio, and High Def Audio listed. Under playback devices I now see Digital Audio HDMI And Speakers VIA High Def Audio. 6 cannel direct works now but the Digital audio HDMI reports not plugged in. If I choose it I can view properties but not configure and HD DECK still will not load and this is where I remember going to tell it to use Digital out put with my previous Vista 32-bit setup. I will try to do this with the asus drivers and update this post with results later...

VIA Vdeck

Okay Using Asus VIA Audio Drivers for the motherboard I can get drivers installed and Vdeck loads. However when trying to switch to expert mode in Vdeck panel I get a Vdeck appcrash error and it closes. It will reopen but again if I try to switch to expert mode the software crashes. So it appears its either an Asus or a VIA software problem. With the VIA Drivers I don't get as far as I do with the Asus drivers plus the Asus driver is a 6.90c driver as opposed to 6.50a driver from VIA. Looks like I'll be waiting on Asus and VIA to fix this for Windows 7. It works just not able to select Optical out so stuck w/ 6 Channel Direct audio for now!!! hope this helps others and or the higher ups.

ASUS - VIA - Win 7

Hey,

I too am having a very similar problem. I can't get the optical SPDIF to initialize and work at all. mikesc380, you seem to have gotten further than I have however. I can't even get the VIA deck (control panel) or drivers to install. The install bombs out with a "missing component" error if I load the ver. 6.50 from the VIA driver d/l page. If I use the ASUS mobo disc, I get an "unsupported OS" error using the ASUS package installer. I tried using compatibility mode but no good.

Please let me know if you get any where with this and I'll do the same.

Thanks

Mixe, welcome to the forums.

No promises but give the Via driver from this board (M4A78 Pro) a try,

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

The only difference I can see between the one on that board and yours is your is the VT1708B, and the other is the VT1708S. If you get the reference driver from Via it is for both solutions, so there is a very good possibility that the driver from the link above will work with yours.

P.S. That is also the board that I have, and as for how well the Via sound works I couldn't tell you as I never read much of anything that had anything good to say about it (think along the lines of how bad Realtek was a couple of years ago) and have never even enabled to to test it.

Mixe, I will try Stormy13 sugestion and post back even though I don't like driver searching that way. But Don't open MOBO CD (Autorun) but Explore you CD by Right clicking your cd from My Computer. Then based on Directory. Try and run the setup files. Sometimes had to use Compatiblity Troubleshooting which is also available by Right Clicking the setup.exe files.

Hey Mikesc380, okay I've now matched your problems tit for tat, as able to get the VIA drivers and the HD V-deck application to load finally by using the Vista compatibility mode.

My problem now is that the S/PDIF doesn't seem to be working at all. I was hoping the latest VIA driver would recognize it but to no avail. It isn't listed under my pc control panel or V-Deck. Nothing in the BIOS about it either.

There are a lot of problems out there re: our ASUS mobos with this particular audio chipset (VT1708B)
Asus boards with VT1708 sound please read - Via Forums

I'm emailing ASUS to see if they have any excuses. Will post the results.

Via Deck

Well The M4A78Pro driver did install with a newer driver version however the HD Deck software will not run at all, so I will go Back to previous driver package available from Asus for my MOBO. May be Asus Or VIA will get this fixed or they will get with Microsoft and figure this out. I keep watching for something new. The reason I say newer is the driver that installs w/ W7 is newer but doesn't have the feature to switch to Digital out. And The Vdeck software causes an Apcrash only when trying to switch to advanced user options. Mixe Did you hear back from Asus or VIA support yet?

Okay I heard back from ASUS and like I figured they bowed out of the problem.

"At this time we cannot offer support or troubleshooting help for Windows 7, and we may not have official, stable, non-beta drivers available for your board until the software is finalized (ie; no longer in Beta/pre-release status, as a driver/app for one build often won't work correctly with others, necessitating driver testing for each pre-release build isn't feasible). You will either need to contact Microsoft for troubleshooting/driver assistance or install a supported OS on the board (XP/Vista) in order for us to be able to assist you with any problems you may have."

I've loaded many things onto Win7 with no problems except this one. I'll probably submit the same ticket again only as a Vista x64 user to see if they come up with any useful tips.

Will advise...

Tell! Them for me Mixe, it is flakey even installed under Vista32-Bit. Take's Techinical knolledge to get it to work properly. There permissions, Certicate for driver don't always pass. May have to run as Admin or Compatiblity Mode to get it to work which happened to me on a Vista64-Bit system also.
See I have a Asus 3450 VGA Ati card that supports audio HDMI through the VGA Card's HDMI connector. And even though I have all Asus products issues still arise because we get that infomous message. This CD was not made for this operating system! You would think AsusAutorun could detect hardware and OS. Microsoft can in Windows7. After all I did say 6-Channel Audio works, 7.1 is listed (But I have 5.1 Spk's) and it works analog but not digital!
Thank's mikesc380

Via Windows 7 64-bit 7300 driver download from VIA Arena has fixed my issues I was having. Not sure when it became Available but I have a newer looking Icon on Desktop For audio deck and it runs and allows me to use Digital Optical out now. Just thought I would update this thread.
