Video card upgrade

Hello I recently built a new computer but used an old pcie x1650 radeon card. The card can play most of my games at decent frame rates. The negative part is that it seems to have a hardware flaw that forces me to put the computer into sleep and wake it up to resolve. its not a driver or motherboard thing as it does the same thing on winxp with a different motherboard.

I would like to buy a new nvidia card for about 250 USD im looking at the GTX 260 or 275 but im not sure what would give me the most performance. My motherboard is sli compatible but i dont want to buy the 2nd now. so im hoping to get one that i could buy a 2nd of the same type later.

thanks for any comments as im really stuck on which to choose.

A 275 has the advantage over a 260. It's not a massive difference, but a difference nevertheless.

275 SLI will outperform 260 SLI (when/if you go there)

I'd perhaps consider either a Radeon 5770 or 5850, the 5770 will have similar performance to the 260, and the 5850 will perform similarly to 2 X 4870's in crossfire config (having said that, performance will most always depend on the game that ou are running at the time). Both of those cards support DirectX 11, whereas I believe that nVidia won't be supporting 11 until early/mid next year.

Their question was regarding the difference between a 260 or 275 - not ATI or crossfire.

Wait for the 300's to come out and drop in price enough for you to buy one. It'll support DX11 and might have some performance boosts. As I get better performance from DX10 than I do from DX9.

ok yes a 275 if you want to stick on nvidia, or wait for the 300 series....

And even if he wanted one, Radeon cards aren't bad, I was actually thinking of getting one instead of nvidia this time. But since I don't want to run the risk of Linux problems I'm going to wait for a bit. Radeon is very good, and no disrespect, but I just think Nvidia is better.

actually its Linux support is much better i had no problems at all with mine except when i tried to use ubuntu studio for some reason it didn't like my driver.... :sarc: but ubuntu 9.10 works awesome

It depends on what you want. If you play at 1080p, then a GTX 275, if you play at 1680x1050, a GTS 250 is enough. If you want DirectX11 support I'd wait until drivers are straightened out for the 5770.

Well once the 300's come out everything else should drop a little as the card specs shift, and then probably another 3 months after that once they get different 300 series cards made

when they come out prices will drop no matter what as the 200 series become the mid range, it's just standard marketing. Your not going to pay "top dollar" for the new mid range card? I wouldn't, I'd be angry.
