Solved Video editing/ clipping app

I'm currently using cyberdirector for doing video editing, and it's fine for the more detailed projects, but I find it bulky and difficult to use when I just want to make quick clips for future reference etc...

What I want is a simple video editing app that supports a good number of formats that will allow me to clip/cut/paste video sections together and publish quickly. (I used to use movie maker, but the live version crashes constantly)

Open to any and all suggestions on this front.

do a google search for avidemux - perfect for little quick clip clipping.

in the above shot, you can select the A and B points where you want to cut, then hit delete.

and there's an 'append', where you can add new clips to the end.

the best thing is you don't have to re-transcode again, it'll use the same codecs settings as the original. just hit the 'save video' button, so no loss of quality if you stick to the same format.

only little quirk that i've noticed is that you have to add the file extension as you save it - so you have to save as 'movie.avi', for example.

It also has varying problems with mp4.

Hmm, I never had any real problems with WLMM (except when I made a mistake). But I always convert everything (except .mov) to .wmv (with Format Factory).

Yeah, I don't like wmv as a container, I'm more fond of mkv,mp4, and mt2s. I've found wmv to require more bitrate to achieve the same levels of quality. ...plus there's embedded subs and other features for the newer containers. ..avi I have practically abandoned at this point because dark scenes always develop pixelation in avi no matter how high you crank up rates.

AviDemux is good for quickly creating clips. I don't think it's that smooth yet for .mkv. You may be aware of this already, but you can use MkvMergeGui from the MkvToolnix package:

to break out clips. Not accurate and no video preview, but it's one way to do it if you know the times you need. Also comes in handy for creating test cases encoding from one format to another etc..

Actually you did a bit to solve my problem suggesting format factory. I've found that if I tell it to convert to the codec the video is already using I can use the range feature to create clips quickly not too mention it even has a video preview for the range option, and the task system for it is nice too since I can set a bunch and just click go.

Anyhow thought I would drop back by and thank you for that one.
