Video monitor incompatibility?

I have two nice Samsung Syncmaster monitors, a 19" and a 17". Both support analog (VGA) and digital (DVI) connections. The 17" works with my new HP Pavilion 'HPE-180t' desktop system (VGA and DVI), but the 19" only works with a VGA connection; connecting via DVI gives the Samsung error message "video mode not supported."

The Pavilion system has an ATI Radeon 4650 card, with DVI, VGA and HDMI outputs. I have set it to 1280 x 1024 resolution, which is the highest resolution supported by the monitors.

The 19" monitor works great via either a DVI or VGA connection with my old PC (a 6-yr old Pavilion).

HP Support says that maybe my 19" monitor is not supported by Windows 7. I don't know what the O.S. has to do with it - isn't this a problem between the signal being put out by the ATI video card and the monitor?

Are other people having problems with new Windows 7 systems not working with older monitors?

Isn't "DVI" a STANDARD?

when do you get the video mode not supported message? immediately or after windows starts to load? have you tried setting your refresh rate to 60hz? does it work in safe mode?

edit just had a quick poke around the interweb , seems it may be either faulty or not cmpatible with your card...................

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=208019

also apparently the ATI cards are combined analogue/digital connections not digital only so maybe a cable issue?

I don't think its just the ATI cards that are combined. I think you will find that most Video cards with a DVI connector are DVI-I, analog and digital. Thats done so you can put a DVI to VGA adapter on it and use a VGA monitor. Even if there is also a VGA connector. The monitors DVI connector will be DVI-D (digital only).

twanger for what its worth I have two 19 I-Inc LCD's running at 1280x1024 on windows 7 x64. One on DVI and the other on VGA. Double check your refresh rate is set to 60hz, you have to go to advanced properties to see it. You could also try a lower resolution just to see if it works.

Thanks for the replies

The 19" monitor is working now. The resolution and refresh rate appeared to be correct. I had to make it (the DVI monitor) the primary monitor (in a two-monitor setup) and also enable ATI's HydraVision multi-monitor manager to get it all working right. It was not very straightforward, but all's well now.

The comments about DVI-I and DVI-D were educational, thanks. The monitors are definitely DVI-D and the card appears to be DVI-I.

I think you will find that mid-high level Video cards with a DVI connector are DVI-I, analog and digital.
there. fixed it for ya.

for example my old el cheapo 6200 was with DVI-D connector.

True enough, single or dual monitor support factors into it too.

twanger are these wide screen or normal aspect ratio monitors. If the 19 inch is a wide screen then 1280x1024 is probabaly the wrong resolution for that monitor.

yep for widescreen 1366x768 would be closer to the truth.

My monitors are 4x3 aspect ratio; 1280 x 1024 is correct.
