Hello Forum,

My system is currently not showing video files as thumbnail images in any folder(s), just the default AVI, WMV, MPEG icons. Picture files such as JPEG, GIF, display the thumbnail image of the given picture just fine.
Has anyone expierienced this quirk, does anyone know how to get the thumbnail image(s) back for video files?

Thanks in advance!

...yes Mickey, I did reboot, but with no results.

I also tryed to Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations for AVI, MPEG, & WMV associations as recommended, but this also did not help.

Once again I appreciate your help w/ this problem, but unless there is any other cures, I may just go back to my last restore point.

Thanks Again!

Hopefully there's some help here for you in this tutorial DJSeven: Visual Effects Settings - Change

To see Video Thumbnails as Thumbnails not Icons:
From the Start Menu open the Control Panel (All Items vew), and click on the Performance Information and Tools icon. Click on the Advanced tools link in the left blue pane.

Click on the 'Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows' link, then close this window afterwards.

Choose the desired settings from the Visual Effects settings.

Check: “Show Thumbnails instead of icons”

Also: Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, then click the "View" tab and make sure "Always show icons not thumbnails" is UNchecked.

Have you tried deleting the thumbnail cache to force explorer to redo them?

Also, if you have these video in the "My Videos" folder or any other folder included in the library, letting WMP create the thumbs might help.

Once again I thank all of you for your help / support,

Imperfect1, I have run through the scenarios that you suggested, but with no success.

Wishmaster, I have not tried 'deleting the thumbnail cache' at this point, nor am I familiar with this process. Would you please explain this process?

Thanks Again to All!

Click your StartOrb:orb:
And in the search box just type: Disk

The first result should be Disk Cleanup.

Select that, and run it.
When you are given the option for what to cleanup, make sure Thumbnails are check. In fact, I would just check everything.
Then run it.

After its done, open your video folder and see if it will make thumbs.

This may not help. But, I only suggest it because I have had times where thumbs were just a black box. And this fixed it for me.

Wishmaster,

Followed your 'Disk Cleanup' proceedure, and again, no change. I guess I can't understand why JPEG / GIF thumbnails look fine, and just the video WMV, AVI, etc. thumbnails are affected. Looking at the properties of these thumbnails / files, Windows Media Player is the defalt viewing program.... Frustrating!

please know that the attached registry file contains NATIVE Windows 7 settings, therefore cannot possible do any damge to your system. The most likely cause of your problems is that a software you have used removed these native registry entries.

You might want to take a look at some of the other video thumbnail threads, particularly this one: Cannot generate .flv thumbnails. Looks like Shark007 saved the day!
