MP4 is a container which can contain video and audio files.
You can play a file on a device when it supports both the container and the codec of it...
H.264/mpeg4 (AVC) is a compression method.
H.264 is the up to date version of mpeg4 compression, and it is known for it's famous bitrate(size):quality ratio which is the best currently between these kind of codecs.
So, mpeg4 avc doesn't equal .mp4.
Here you can find a few free conversion softwares.

Media support
The Galaxy S II comes with support for many multimedia file formats and codecs. For audio it supports (FLAC, WAV, Vorbis, MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, MID, AC3, XMF), video codecs (mpeg4, H.264, H.263, DivX HD/XviD, VC-1) and video formats (3GP (MPEG-4), WMV (Advanced Systems Format), AVI (divx)).
Continued support for the MKV format container was confirmed.[52][53] Continued native playback support for the Sorenson codec within FLV was also confirmed for this device[54] which was not stated in the Galaxy SII specifications as it was done in the Galaxy S.
Up to 1080p video resolution playback is supported both on Exynos and Tegra 2 respectively, although unlike the Exynos 4210, Tegra 2 has been stated to not support 'high profile' encoded h.264 video.[55][56]"

VERY nice! almost like a PC with codec packs..
I suggest you to use 848X480px resolution for 16:9 video files with a ~2000kbits per second bitrate.
you don't have to up the resoluition due to the screen resolution limits, if you find the video good you can lower the bitrate futhermore...

I do not know why you want to use ffdshow. You can download the tryouts here .

( I use MPC-HomeCinema with DVD Fab's PassKey Lite to play the Blu-ray movies. with the default 2 channel. But I think you can map your 5.1 going into View>Options>Internal Filters>Audio Switcher. You may try.)
