Videos/Games freeze for about 10 seconds when first started

After installing an upgraded graphics card driver, whenever I first start playing a video or game, it freezes for a few seconds before playing normally. It only does this once, untill the computer is rebooted/turned off/on. Is there some way to diagnose this without uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver? I do not know if it is even the driver or something else maybe conflicting. or, if it is that specific driver. If I do have to reinstall, is there some other things I should do along side to make sure there is no problems again?

Usually if you never had a graphics card (GPU) issue before and now you do after installing the so-called "latest and greatest" it means the new driver is causing the issue. Plain and simple. So, if that's the case, you'll need to try an older driver, and if the problem STILL happens, you'll need to try an older driver still.

Was there a GPU issue prior to installing this driver?

You may need to experiment with the ATI control panel settings.

If you go to search and enter dxdiag, do all tabs say "no problems", even if you run the 64 bit version?

You got the driver here, right? ATI/AMD drivers

I don't even see a 5800 series driver other than the 5000m.

Found it. It's an HD model. ATI Driver

Here's some older drivers. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 Drivers Download for Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, XP Make sure you scan at VirusTotal. General consensus is 4 hits and you toss.

Here's the user manual if you ever need that. AMD ATI Radeon HD 5870, ATI Radeon HD 5850, ATI Radeon HD 587, ATI Radeon HD 5750, ATI Radeon HD 5770 User manual : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

Pretty cool it's actually there though. Couldn't find older drivers however. You'd think AMD would have them like Nvidea.

Thanks for the help.

I cannot find older drivers, since AMD does not have them on their site.
Is there a trustworthy site that has older drivers for my desktop HD 5850?

I checked the dxdiag in both 32 and 64 bit and there was no problems found.

The CCC settings are mostly default with some changes to the 3D settings under the gaming section, the way I had it previously.
The CCC sometimes turns all black, never happened before, so I guess this driver is bad (14.4, I previously had 13.12.)

I changed the driver because I had minor blue screen issues with an ati file supposedly being the culprit.

I tried using amd's driver cleaner in safe mode and tried both going back to 13.12 and the latest 15.7.1, but I am still having this problem. I think maybe something got messed up after I uninstalled/installed the drivers because when I go into the event log, it says "MMC could not create the snap-in". That is something to do with the Multimedia Class Scheduler? It is on automatic though, as it is required for audio.

This freezing problem is really annoying me because it should not be happening and I do not understand why changing drivers, even going back to old ones, is causing it. Another thing about it I did not mention was that after the initial freeze (in whichthere is a hourglass cursor), it starts playing fast for like 2 seconds, then stops, then plays normally. It only happens on the first video or game that is played after first booting up the computer. Any other video/game will start/play normally until the computer is rebooted. Is there something the computer does when a video/game is first started after boot up that could be having problems?

According to this article referring to Windows 10, it could be due to .Net or a registry key. I would first do a system restore and then uninstall/reinstall all of your .Net framework installs. If one is problematic on uninstall that could be an indicator it's .Net related. If that doesn't work move on to that so-called registry fix outlined in the article. I would refrain from renaming mmc.exe. That looks like it glosses over the issue rather than fix it.

Note: Your specific error message that refers to the CLSID will be the key to remove from the registry. If you do go into the registry to try and fix the issue that way, double click on the CLSID and tell me what it refers to on the right hand side.

Multimedia Class Scheduler is an interesting one and I have read some information on it. This service could very well be your freezing issue. Try turning that service off once and see if you still have video issues. By that I mean stop the service and then disable startup. It appears back in the Vista days if you turned off MMCSS audio wouldn't work. Not sure if this also applies to Windows 7 or not, but try turning off the service anyway and see what happens. It is kind of a band-aid though as MMCSS can be used by certain applications for your benefit. Interesting enough, in this Windows 10 install I'm using something called Tiny10 and while MMCSS is present, its service is not registered or started and I have had no issues thus far. I see in Windows 7 its service is present however. But that's not some striped down OS like this Windows 10 install is.

I'm actually curious what your MMCSS settings are. Perhaps they have changed and I can cross check them with my default Windows 7 install. Run the attached bat file and it will place the MMCSS_reg_export.txt file on your desktop. Zip that and upload here.

I tried deleting the registry key it was referring to, but that did not help.
I tried to disable .Net Framework 3.5 but it gives me an error saying it was unable to change the windows features.
And now for some reason, I am having a message on the bottom right corner above the time/date telling me my copy of Windows is not genuine.
All of this just because I uninstalled/reinstalled gpu drivers?

I do not connect that Windows 7 pc to the internet, so it cannot be virus or update related (last time I updated it was back in December 2015 when I first installed it. I do not feel like having to look up each update to make sure I do not install some telemetry thing or a W10 upgrade thing or messages telling me to stop using W7). The computer has been working fine all these years until this.

And I think the problem might just be audio related cause it happens with audio only files, too. They "play" (freeze) for 10 seconds, then skip to the 10 second point, play slowly for 2 or so more seconds, then play normally after that. The HD audio drivers for HDMI audio got uninstalled for some reason when I uninstalled the gpu drivers, dispite them being Realtek drivers and not AMD. I do not use the HDMI port though, my monitor is plugged in with DVI and my headphones with 3.5mm audio port on the soundcard side. I do not see why that would cause an problem, but I do not know anymore.

There's way more going on here to shake a stick at and without me actually sitting in front of your computer is very hard to diagnose.

You can acquire malware without Internet access. A contaminated USB drive could do it for one. Where did you get that GPU update driver? Was it ever scanned? Maybe scan it at VirusTotal.

At this point I'd backup your data and then try an in place reinstall. Repair Install

If you do not have Windows 7 media, read here: https://www.sevenforums.com/install...oad-windows-7-home-microsoft.html#post3519344

Actually, I fixed the non-genuine thing, it was because Software Protection was disabled.

The drivers I downloaded directly from AMD's website on my Android tablet and transfered it to my computer by usb.

I was thinking of upgrading to W10, is it still possible for free? My mainboard does not have drivers to download for it though past 7.

If your motherboard manufacture doesn't have Windows 10 drivers it's probably a no go. Though, it's entirely possible Windows 10 will use its default drivers.

Did you try what I sai in post 7?

I also said the following:

I did not say try to disable .Net.

Installing Windows 10 doesn't fix your issue. It just steam rolls over it. In other words, there's a fix, there always is. I know I could fix it if I were sitting in front of your computer. But like I said, a repair install might help.

You could see if there are any integrity violations with SFC (System File Checker). Go to search and enter cmd and then right click command prompt and run as Admin. Now in command prompt enter the following: sfc /scannow. Notice the space...

I will try running that .bat file and the scan and then upload the results. (although, if I did need a repair... I do not have a disc drive anymore or even know where my 7 disc is)

MMCSS is needed for audio to work in 7. The audio processes require it. It gives me an error saying such.

I only had .net 4.5.2 installed. I uninstalled it and there was no change. I tried to disable the 3.5 to see if it helped but it would not let me. When I rebooted the computer after trying that, it said the Windows update was a failure and it was reverting changes. I installed 4.8 after and it installed fine, but I got that update failure message again after rebooting.

The audiodg.exe seems to be the one, maybe. I notice whenever audio plays for the first time, when that servive starts, it starts up with a bit of cpu usage and low memory usage. Then it shoots up to its usual memory usage when things start playing fine. Even when the audiodg.exe stops (which it does if audio has not been played after 5 mins), and then restarts, it is normal and does not do the freezing thing until the computer is rebooted.
I tried looking up stuff about it and all I saw was things about disabling sound effects but that does not help.

I already tried reinstalling both the gpu and audio drivers.

I thought Windows 10 would auto install its own drivers or something, but I was not sure. My board does not have drivers for it on the manufacturer webpage, so I wanted to be safe by making sure before I tried. So I guess it is a bad idea.

And thanks for taking your time to assist me. I wish I did have you sitting in front of my computer working your technical knowledge!
