Virtual PC configuration fails

I've seen several posts on this subject, but can't get enough information out of them to solve my problem. I have a new Dell E6520 running Enterprise 64bit. I need the virtual XP to run some older software. Following the instructions, I successfully installed Windows XP mode. Next step is to install Virtual PC. The installation of KB958559 appeared successful, but when I restarted the computer it got to about 95% and reported configuration failure. It then reverted changes (thank goodness).

I tried to follow previous postings and ended up on a page "How do I reset Windows Update components." There was a statement that this page didn't apply to my version of Windows and I should go to the Windows 7 solution center. I had gone there previously and didn't see anything helpful, so I tried running the FixIt solution in automatic non-aggressive mode. I tried installing Virtual PC again and it failed in the same way.

I saw some statement about the BIOS not having virtualization support enabled, but I don't know if that applies or what to do if it does apply.

What should I do now?

No response re failure configuring virtual PC

I've received no response about my inability to configure virtual PC. Am I posting in the wrong forum?

What should I do now?

The version of virtual pc that you have most likely requires virtualization being activated in bios. Check your bios for virtualization support and then run vpc again and the the xp install.

Problem was Symantec AV

In another Forum I was pointed to a thread where the problem was Symantec AV. It was necessary to completely uninstall Symantec. Then the installation of Vistual PC and XP Mode went smoothly. Afterwards I re-installed Symantec.

Great that you were able to install it. That is one problem with some AV products is that they interfer with installing some software. Many times the software says to disable your AV during installation but some forget to read that warning..
