Virtual XP won't attach scanner it sees.

I run Win 7 64 bit with Virtual XP. I loaded HP 5400C software into Virtual XP. I attached Scanner and was able to scan/print and scan/pdf. ie everything worked as it should. A week later Virtual XP requested I run 7 updates. Since 7 updates the Virtual XP sees the scanner. When I request "attach" it goes ding dong. When I check again the wording does not change to "release" I think the problem lies with the recent updating. The scanner software reports the scanner can't be found. (I am new and very unfamiliar with how the help will arrive)

Hi and welcome.
How is the scanner connected to the host computer? USB? Do you have a firewall on the XP computer like Comodo which could be blocking the software to the scanner? If it is USB does the virtual XP see any USB Flash drives? Does the host machine see the scanner? The host machine has to see and report the scanner is working correctly or the virtual machine will not work either. Check your firewall on the host system too.
