Solved virus attack: turned windows security center off. cannot turn on

am looking please for help.
I went to a website looking for information on the new slide I got to play my guitar.

I saw something about virus in the address.

it turned off my windows security center. it will not let me turn it back on.

I have downloaded and ran malwarebytes. it found 4 bad things. I removed them and re-started. the 4 bad things were:

rootkit.dropper.RL
and then 3 things that said Pum.disabled. security center.

will anyone please help me?

ok. figured out how to get windows security center turned back on.

now I have to keep signing in to websites, after I reboot my computer, even though I check the box to keep me logged in.

would someone please reply and tell me if they have any ideas how to fix this problem?

Charlie,

That is a pretty significant rootkit. Often, in the case of rootkits, you can never be completely sure the system has been completed cleaned unless you wipe the entire system and install from scratch.

Try deleting the cookies from that particular website and then try logging in again.Give it a try , might help.:sarc:

Rootkits tend not to infect user data files, but rather the core of the underlying system.

that clean reinstall might be a over my head.

so for now, am trying to clean computer with Windows Defender Offline.

with quick scan, it found a trojan that it said was monitoring software that is dangerous and records user activity.

any thoughts about if you think this may solve my problem?

WDO says that it successfully removed the trojan. now I'm running a full scan.

any thoughts are welcome.

I finished running a full scan with WDO.
it did not find any other problems.
I am thinking that I will try my computer and see how it is now.

first sign of trouble and I will do what you say.

ran malwarebytes again (did it yesterday too). this time it found 2 trojans.
rebooted.
my computer (sony vaio laptop that I have used much since purchasing 8 months ago and loved), is in very bad shape.
the hard drive is very very loud. the cpu usage is very high. and I am not even doing anything.
there is something very wrong with my beloved sony vaio.

ok. so I will do a clean reinstall. Golden, I do not have any recovery disks. would you please tell me how to proceed in light of that?

do I need them?

win x64 iso 7% downloaded. 6 and a half hours to go.

Read the tutorial to start with. Make sure you are downloading the correct ISO for your laptop (e.g. Home Premium 32 bit). Make sure you have a COA sticker on the bottom of the laptop, and that the product key is clearly legible.

Check back here if any steps are unclear, and be sure to backup any user data before you start.

thank you. step 4 talks about Recovery Disks. I do not have any.

would you please tell me if I can do the clean reinstall without them??

Yes, you can. Step 4 is recommending that you make these recovery disks purely in case you need to set the laptop back to its factory state - this is different to a clean install.

So, boot into your laptop as normal, and create the factory disks before you attempt a clean install.

thanks Golden. the sony vaio recovery stuff for my laptop is missing or gone.

am forging ahead with clean reinstall.

I do not have the start up disk for my Windows Office. do you know if I will have to buy it again? the only thing I use it for is Word.

It may just be a case of contacting MS and getting another set of disks posted to you - I'll ask around and get a more definitive answer. In the meantime, go ahead and do the clean install.

am doing the clean reinstall.

in step 7 (Select the hard drive or partition that you want to install Windows 7), I got a window saying it would move old files to something marked .old.
and I could do something but not something else with the files (folder?).

the choices were ok and cancel. I clicked ok. and away we go.

its installing windows.

after step 7:"After the final restart, you will see this screen for a moment." it went back to
step 3 (instead of step 10 and step 11, where I would make my user name and so on).

I am now going through from step 3 again. so its reinstalling again.

something went wrong. would you please tell me what I should do?

(ok. its waiting for me to enter language again. this would make the 3rd time. I'm just in a loop, going nowhere.
just doesn't seem right. does anybody out there please know whats going on here?)
