MSE

Borg 386 I am disabled and not technical dose MSE have automatic schedule for the computer to see for virus is their a pop up telling for updates and automatic schedule?

My Computer

Hey brightsun,

MSE has a scheduling program built in, you can set it to scan weekly, or daily. You can also choose the time of day and hour you would like it to scan.

It has real-time protection and is always running in the background.

You can adjust the scanning times and select between a full scan or a quick scan. You can also set the options to update the definitions before the scan and to only scan when the PC is not in use.

Your windows update will check regularly and let you know if any new AV definitions are available, or if you have it set to automatically d/l and install, it will do that.

MSE releases about 3 - 4 updates daily, there is a update button you can click on to check for them manually.

All in all, it's a well made program with a high ranking in AV tests. Many people in this forum run it.

MSE

Borg 386 is their a pop up indicator for updates, plus runs scheduled scans and the length of the scans.

Hi brightsun,

A Yellow-Orange pop-up appears if you haven't updated MSE for a week. There is no pop-up if the latest update is installed.

A Blue pop-up appears if a scheduled scan has started. MSE doesn't indicate the possible duration/length of a scan, but only the time elapsed during a scan.

Red pop-ups appear if malware infections/threats are detected but are not yet cleaned.

Green pop-ups appear if malware infections/threats are successfully cleaned.

Hope this helps.

Note, results will vary from person to person depending on what you plan on doing and what others do.

If you are a highly active web site browser... Venturing to multiple web sites without a care in the world, as in not caring what it is and where it may go... You may want to consider scanning on a daily basis. If you don't browse beyond a few web sites, then you might not need need to do it quite so often.

Viruses and malware will happen on a daily basis... Whether or not you do a scan daily or weekly. Your chances of getting it will vary on how risque you are as far as your browsing is and how open your internet connection is. Updates for any AV or such will come when they can. Most AV suites will look for updates daily, be it MSE, AVG, McAfee, or Norton, mostly because on a daily basis there is always going to be a new virus or malware variant popping up.

Some programs you will need to manually update, like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, mostly because malware attacks aren't as super intrusive compared to Viruses. They are still annoying and usually tied more with web browsing for the most part.

In either case, look at some of them and see if the interface is to your liking... There is not really one that is better than the other except in how you would like it to do what you want to do and again, asking us is going to give you only a slightly biased opinion to a degree.

Hey brightsun

I agree with Keiichi25, it depends on your preferences and how much you are on the web & how many places you visit.

Malwarebytes is a good program, I would definitely recommend having it on your system, but you have to update it manually & they release updates once a day on average.

As Keiichi25 mentioned, viruses happen daily and the time between identifying a new one, then releasing a virus def can be hours to days, so not everything gets them all, it's impossible.

I'm fairly active online (well, used to be before the @#$%^& homework started piling up) but I'm like frzwin7, I run scans manually.

If your windows updater is set to install programs automatically, then it will keep your MSE up to date on the defs.

If you have a lot of web usage then it probably wouldn't hurt to run a full scan once a day to be on the safe side and malwarebytes every few days.

Hope this helps

Hi, brightsun.

There is only one released version of MSE (although there is currently a beta version being tested). MSE is available from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/.

Please Note:

  • If you have another antivirus software installed, you will need to uninstall it before installing MSE.
  • If you are using a "security suite" that includes a software firewall, when you uninstall that program, you need to go to the Action Center and activate the Windows 7 Firewall.
