Note, results will vary from person to person depending on what you plan on doing and what others do.
If you are a highly active web site browser... Venturing to multiple web sites without a care in the world, as in not caring what it is and where it may go... You may want to consider scanning on a daily basis. If you don't browse beyond a few web sites, then you might not need need to do it quite so often.
Viruses and malware will happen on a daily basis... Whether or not you do a scan daily or weekly. Your chances of getting it will vary on how risque you are as far as your browsing is and how open your internet connection is. Updates for any AV or such will come when they can. Most AV suites will look for updates daily, be it MSE, AVG, McAfee, or Norton, mostly because on a daily basis there is always going to be a new virus or malware variant popping up.
Some programs you will need to manually update, like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, mostly because malware attacks aren't as super intrusive compared to Viruses. They are still annoying and usually tied more with web browsing for the most part.
In either case, look at some of them and see if the interface is to your liking... There is not really one that is better than the other except in how you would like it to do what you want to do and again, asking us is going to give you only a slightly biased opinion to a degree.
