Virus we cleared, wiped out 50 word documents+ Gdrive sync deleted web

Luckily she has a backup on her work PC.

I think Google drive is a good idea.
I think syncing is a bad idea.

I figure the virus deleted the word docs, and gdrive synced the changes.
Is that how it works? Delete local file, gdrive deletes off the web?

I'm not sure how Google Drive works since I don't use it... but most online backup schemes* include versioning. You can get old versions of any backed up document.
