Hi omiey, welcome to 7F!
Biggest clue? Make sure the address starts with https, and not http.
If you use FireFox, and haven't seen a https prefix in a while there is a reason.
Since FF7 mozilla has stopped using http all together, and that includes https, but there is a way to bring it back: How to Bring Back “http://” in Firefox 7

Type/Copy/Paste any URL you want to check after the = sign here:
http://google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=
You can click on this link, but you will generate a 400 error, just add the = sign, and the full address you want to check in the address bar with no spaces, resubmit.
You can also use add-ons like WOT or Google Safe Browsing has one for Chrome, and FireFox that offer visual clues before you click.
These add-ons are browser specific.
Check your anti-malware program it may already have a browsing tool, and just needs activated.
The best tool, and last line of defense is you, take your time before you click,
look, and read the page if it sounds too good to be true it isn't!
