Vista 64bit to W7 32bit

I went from 64bit vista to w7 32 bit. I did the clean install and was wondering if there was a need for the x86 program files? If not, how do I delete it?

32bit shouldnt have a program files (x86) folder :S

Yea, I didnt reformat or anything but when I did the Install I still have the x86 program files with all my old stuff in it. I would like to just delete it if possible and if it's not needed.

If you did a clean install you shouldn't have x86 folders. did you format the disk? did youhave to reinstall all of your apps?

Hm...this is an interesting one

I am afraid the upgrade mixed your x64 remnants of programs with your x86 Win 7 Files over the two folders

I am not sure if it would be safe to delete those folders

I think you installed windows 7 x86 without formating it..
That is why program files(x86) is still present. delete it and also delete windows.old. And after that reinstall your programs.

But it is recommended that you format the drive before preforming a clean installation.

Always install with a blank, unformatted drive. If it was me, I'd back my data up, wipe the drive, and install Windows 7 again. One of the best ways to ruin a system's stability is to leave old junk sitting around.

This is one of the problems with not doing a clean install. A clean install means format then install. Anything else is an upgrade. if you have a windows.old folder, or an x86 program folder you have an issue.

My advice is back up to another partiton or drive format and re-install 32bit

I have a similar problem.

Here's the scenario of my laptop upgrade.

I initially did an upgrade installation (32 bit) but problems started to arise to I decided to do a clean install and because of this I also decided to go for the 64 bit version.

All seemed to be going well and I activated the product. It was after this I discovered I was having compatibility issues and decided to revert back to 32 bit. I re-installed Widows 7 (32 bit) along with my software and as everything was back to normal with no issues I activated the product and I can conform that it says so in the system properties. It would appear that you can activate each version.

I do have a Program Files and a Program Files (86) Folder with programs split between them. I thought that when a clean installation is done and the disk formatted that all previous entries are lost so why should these folders 'come back'.

I tried to do the Windows Experience Index but after going through the checks it won't give me a rating because it says there are issues. Could this relate to the folder problem or can you give me an answer.

Anytime you do an upgrade, without formatting the drive, you can experience strange issues and instability. That's the primary reason why many of us won't ever do it.

Agreed, upgrade is a horrible option. if you have the option, take the spare time to do a clean fresh format, will save you installing your stuff, then having problem after problem, and in turn eventually do a clean format, don't waste your time.
