vista basic to windows 7

i upgraded to windows 7 from vista basic if i ever have to reinstall windows 7 do i need to install vista first then windows 7 or can i just do a clean install from the upgrade disc when windows is running or do i have to do it from boot

You can do a clean install. When you are asked for your key number, do not give the information. Finish the installation and then try it. If satisfactory install your programs and use it again. If you are satisifed supply your key number. Once activated make a system image and put it in a safe place. You will never have to reinstall using the DVD, again.
