Vista showing as default and only OS

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and things seemed to go well. I've now noticed though that in msconfig/boot, startup and recovery etc, Vista is showing as the default, and only, operating systam. Windows 7 doesn't even appear as an option. But system specs says Windows 7.

I mentioned this briefly in another thread on a different topic and someone suggested I might be able to fix this by altering the boot manager (which only shows Vista), using bcdedit. I'm not a novice but I'm not a techie either so if this, or another method, is possible, I'd really appreciates someone walking me through this. Ideally I don't want Vista on my computer at all. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for the help. I do agree with the clean install but I don't really feel comfortable doing it now but it's certainly something I will seriously look into. Anyway here's what's in boot manager:

I was thinking of EasyBCD and couldn`t remember the name of it.

But you say Vista shows up in a few more places, I don`t know if it would help.

EasyBCD is for dual boots anyway, old data pay it no mind :)

Thanks AddRAM. So is Vista still on my computer, and if not why does it say Vista in boot manager etc? Startup certainly looks like Windows 7, Microsoft pulsing flag etc. My main concern was if Vista was still present there could be security issues. in boot manager, although it has Vista under boot loader, at the top it says Windows 7 (6.1.7601).

I wouldn`t worry about it, you can always do the clean install using the tutorial I posted. (As long as you have your Vista key I believe)

I`m sure you have 7 now :)

Thanks again. Doesn't sound like it's a problem so I'll leave it as it is for now and maybe do a clean install at a later date when I've read more about it.

The scans didn't find any problems. System shows Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Other programs like Speccy and Ultimate Windows Tweaker say Windows 7 SP1 too. In fact every 3rd party program I've used that shows system specs says it's Windows 7 SP1.

I've now noticed though that in msconfig/boot, startup and recovery etc, Vista is showing as the default, and only, operating systam.

I don't know what you mean by etc, and where else you see Vista.

You should be able to use EasyBCD to rename the "Vista" to "Windows 7", even if you have only 1 OS boot menu entry.
You can download the free version without registering.
EasyBCD - NeoSmart Technologies

If you want to rename the Vista boot entry to Win 7 the easy way:
Run EasyBCD
Select Edit Boot Menu
Select the Vista entry
Click on Rename
Type in Windows 7
Click on Save Settings

Reboot and let us know if you still see Vista.

Thanks a lot. Done that and worked fine. My concern though was that there may have been Vista remnants left on my computer in startup. If there are, just changing the name won't alter this. Would you say you don't believe this is the case as startup, desktop and general operation all look like Win 7, control panel/system says Windows 7, and that the name Vista as boot default OS was just a leftover from the upgrade, but startup is in fact Win7?

PS - Vista also appeared as the default OS on the Windows 7 installation disc when I wanted to access its recovery options the other week.

On boot when I press F8 and enter recovery options the default green Vista screensaver appears. When I run startup repair it says there are a number of signature problems, all 6.0 something, which I understand is Vista. Also, when I select system restore it says there are no restore points but there are restore points.

You don't have 2 OS's on the PC.
So it sounds like problems from the upgrade install.
Those should get fixed if you do the clean install as suggested by AddRAM in post #2.

Apparently Vista had a really strange Boot manager, maybe why they excluded it from Auto update to W10.

Thanks a lot everyone. As long as it's not a security issue I'll probably leave things as they are for a while, and do a clean install if I decide to go for Win10.
