Vista to Win 7 now need to move to new PC

HI

A friend upgraded from Vista to Win 7 last month using MS Upgrade (download). He now has the chance to move to a new(and better) pc. Can he use the Lic Key he got with the upgrade and install win 7 on the new pc? His present pc is an HP Desktop and I assume the original vista was OEM.

Any help/suggestions welcome.

I'm not absolutely certain as he would probably have to install Vista on the new computer before his Windows 7 upgrade key would be accepted. If Vista is an OEM version that would complicate matters because it's tied to the machine it's on.

That said, you may get away with cloning the old drive system onto the new system with software such as Acronis True Image.

I'm hoping others more knowledgable than me will have some more definitive answers.

Just a point though, won't the new computer already have Windows 7 on it?

No it won't as it's not new and the owner (me) will be using the lic for it.

You will need to return the original HP pc to factory state running vista. You will then need a qualifying licence for the second machine it's original OS if this was at least XP (Home for win7 Home, Pro for win7 Pro) this does not need to be installed but you must have proof of licence available if requested.

the original systems OEM licence cannot be used for a qualifying licence for the new system even if the original system is destroyed

Once you install win7 on the new system you will need to call Microsoft to activate, explaining exactly what you have done.
