I attempted to upgrade my Vista Ultimate x64 to Win 7 Ultimate x64 yesterday and the upgrade process failed.

The install rolled back to my Vista install and all is good, but I really want to upgrade to 7 (and not do a clean install)

Can anyone help me out with how to diagnose what may have gone wrong with the upgrade? Is there an install log file somewhere that I can have a look at to discover the problem?

I think I may know the source of the problem, but would like to confirm it before moving forward.

The upgrade did tell me that my Silicon Image RAID controller may not work properly after the upgrade. But I don't have any drives connected to it. My system drive is a RAID 0 array on my Intel ICH8R/ICH9R SATA RAID controller.

Any and all help is appreciated!

You may want to find out if there are win 7 64bit drivers for the controller. If there arent you can use the 64bit vista driver by installing it in compatibility mode. You may have to disable the controler while installing win 7 and enabling it after. It may work it may not. Raid and 64 bit especially difficult.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info SIW2!

I opened the log file and have done a lot of hunting around in it. (It's over 32MB) Unfortunately I can't seem to find anything that I can point to as being the error (or even point in time) where the install fails and the restore back to Vista begins.

I did seem to see lots of warnings related to my Kaspersky Antivirus. (I upgraded to the latest Win 7 compatible version before running the upgrade.)

I am now beginning to suspect that this is the problem with the upgrade. Has anyone else had problems with Kaspersky (or any other AV product) during an upgrade? I'm thinking that maybe I should uninstall it, upgrade and then re-install.

Any comments / words of wisdom?

Funny you should mention Kaspersky Anitvirus. On another thread someone there was having similar issues due to their Kap Anti-virus. They removed the anti-virus and their installation worked fine. I would try this next.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply.

I was in the middle of writing the post & so got lazy & didn't do a search for Kaspersky first.

Should have time to get to this tonight & will update with my results.

Aside from Kaspersky you should also try checking any third party software that might affect the upgrade. AV/Security Software will interfere with installation since it tries to block the process on the upgrade thinking that the installation might be a virus. Also programs like Perfect Disk is really difficult to remove!

Good luck and let us know ;)

After uninstalling Kaspersky I tried the upgrade again and it worked perfectly!

So, Kaspersky antivirus needs to be noted as a "problem child" for doing upgrades.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply!
