Vista Win Mail Conversion in Windows 7

I think Microsoft really screwed up here. I see many people have had the same surprise when converting from Vista to Windows 7 that there is no automatic replacement for Win Mail and that emails and contacts are getting lost. I think Microsoft needs to somehow solve this situation immediately. I spent like over 2 hours with Microsoft customer service who kept bouncing me around and noone of them knew how to go step-by-step conversion to this so called no web Microsoft mail program. Now I wish I would have stayed with Vista, even if it did have problems. Verrryyy verry frustrated!!

I had no problem. I was using the Windows mail with Vista. I tranferred everything to Win 7 vis Windows Live Mail. Everything transferred, contacts, address, mail without a hitch.

Hello Damccarty, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you did a in-place upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, then your emails (C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders) and contacts (C:\Users\(user-name)\Contacts) may still be there. The replacement email program in Windows Live Mail that will need to be downloaded and installed instead. The two tutorials below can help show you how to import your email messages and contacts from Vista's Windows Mail (if still there in Windows 7) into Windows Live Mail.

Or he could copy the Windows Mail folder from Vista (to another HD or CD) and, after the Win7 install, rename the Win7 Windows Mail folder and replace it with the Vista Windows Mail folder. One can continue to use the old, familiar WM. The caveats are that it will not register as the default client, so clicking on a .nws or .eml file (outside of WM) will not open WM, nor will clicking on a mail link from a browser (although sometimes a reg edit will resolve that last one). Worthwhile until I can find a decent mail client.
WM Live doesn't fall into that category, IMO.

Once Windows Live Mail is setup properly it works perfectly, mutipule accounts, just works.
