I will apologize from the begining since I did not know where to post this to first, since it is two problems and not just one.

Ok, I just finished reformating my system, set up all my programs, then turned on my receiver to play some music off my computer. When I turned on the receiver my computer monitor went to an extended view, I was not able to do anything, all it showed was a background image. I then turned on the tv, the monitor came back on as it was normally and the tv shows what the monitor shows, just the way I had it set up. The problem is when I turn the TV off the monitor goes back to just being a background and I can not do anything. How do I fix this problem? I would love to play music from my receiver without having the tv on at the sametime.

It sounds like you're hooked up via HDMI, correct?

Some receivers make Windows think they are displays when in reality they are not. If you want high-quality audio to your receiver, an alternative (if you have the output) is using S/PDIF (optical).

Otherwise, the only other option (that I see) is extending your desktop instead and making sure your playback default device is the HDMI output.

Hi, thanks for responding. Well I kept the same hook-up before I reformated my computer and was able to run the receiver without having the tv turned on. Maybe it is the default configuration you were talking about in your post? If you think it is, could you walk me through how to change the default back to my monitor? As you can tell I am not a big computer guy. Thanks for the help.

If your receiver does TRUE HDMI pass-through, your TV should be listed as a playback device. Your receiver may also be listed when it's turned on.

When it comes to video, it's the fact that your receiver DOES have HDMI pass-through. When it turns on, HDMI streams are now handled by it versus whatever was at the other end and that MAY be what is throwing off your PC. Your receiver knows that whatever video input signal that comes in via HDMI needs to be thrown to HDMI OUT (whatever that is). It doesn't check if the device at the other end is ACTUALLY on because it assumes it will be (the point of turning on the receiver, perhaps). That may be a receiver tweak.

You can ALSO Try hitting WIN+P and choosing COMPUTER ONLY (or PROJECTOR ONLY if TV is MONITOR 1) and see if you can still send audio out your HDMI cable. (on mine I can't. Says it's not plugged in)
