Don't know what happened but some things got changed. The transparent mouse selection thingy when you drag your mouse on the desktop is the normal Windows XP/Basic one where it's just the dotted line. Also, the desktop wallpaper slide show doesn't fade into each picture it just does a quick switch. So what I'm thinking is that my computer is running in a low visual appearance mode or something like that. Can I switch it back?

Edit: There's also no Window minimize animation so yea...

Re-run WEI. Are you running an "aero" theme?

What graphics card?

For fixing the mouse select and other things, just go to the Windows Assessment page, then click on Adjust Visual Effects in the left column. You can turn back on those features there. Something must have set you to a higher performance state which turns off visual effects.

Yes, you may have accidentally turned off some of the Aero features via the performance tab of system settings.

Right Click Computer > Advanced System Settings > System > Performance > Set it to the best visual if that's what you want.

Personally, I recommend that you turn off Aero and set that setting to best performance, but I'm less concerned with how my desktop looks and more concerned with how fast it runs.

Then you are doing a disservice to yourself. Aero is in fact what you want for performance, turn off animation sure, and transparency. But YOU WANT AERO for the sole fact it offloads most everything to the GPU. Where as Classic and Basic run entirely on the CPU.

Yh, this solution fixed my problem, I also have this Problem, the Desktop Background just changes very quick, any solution for how to get it back to normal, when if the desktop background changes, its fades in or out.

Personalize

Have you tried checking the settings in "Personalize"?

  1. Open the "Start Menu"
  2. Type "background" in the Search box (no quotes)
  3. Choose "Change desktop background" from the results list
  4. Adjust the time using the "Change picture every:" drop-down box at the bottom of the window
