I no longer use it as my primary movie player, but still often use it when in a hurry. My primary objection to it is that when playing one of my encoded video files, that it always has moments when the picture becomes very distorted. This will clear very quickly, but is annoying none the less.

If I understand, VLC has it's own codec, which makes me suspect that is the source of the problem, but the distortion will occur, regardless of the format of the video files being played. Therefore, I'm less certain that this issue is rooted in the codec.

Does anyone understand exactly what the cause of this is, or how to fix it?

This happens to me also but only on wmv files. mp4 and avi are fine. You can check "use system codecs" in preferences and see if that helps.

No, I just tested that twice, and both times it caused the entire system to freeze when selecting a movie.

Not really.

I do not know which AV you use, but I have found Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to be the least interfering.

The problem is not caused by my firewall/AV. I shut it off and the problem continued.

Yes, I'm running 1.1.10. The only improvement that I can see so far, is that it doesn't cause the videos to stall momentarily at the very beginning, like 1.1.7 did.

If this issue happens with any video format, and seeing as how you use internal codecs, you may be right that this is not a codec issue, but I personally think this may be an issue with VLC itself instead.

I rarely watch videos on my PC... actually, I rarely watch videos at all, and the only setting I change in VLC is disabling hardware YUV->RGB conversions, which (when enabled) always makes any videos I play "lighter", as if the contrast is wrong, lol.

But as for the distortion of the picture, nothing really comes to mind. Does it happen completely at random while playing throughout the entire clip without pauses? Does it happen when you seek forward/backward (this seems to be happening commonly in VLC).

I just disabled YUV > RGB conversion, and will try it on the next movie. Yes, it happens totally at random throughout the movie. There is no way to expect when it will occur. As far as seeking, I haven't noticed any connection with the problem. After a distortion has occurred, I have tried backing up the video, to see if it will happen again as before, and it will not.

That may have solved the problem. I just run a movie through the player. I didn't see any difference in contrast or brightness, but it never became distorted as before. I will have to play a couple more before I feel certain though.

YUV-RGB disabling doesn't solve the issue

Hello, I've been following this thread closely and have tried the last suggestion which was to disable YUV-RGB, but the same random distortion keeps occurring. Any new suggestions?
