vmware vs. virtual box for win 10 Preview.

Which virtual software is better for installing win 10 preview?
I tried VMware and it worked but missed some settings. to access other partitions.
I have also seen some different instructions in actually installing win 10.

VMWare is excellent for W10TP. What do you mean by "access other partitions"? On the HOST?

I installed Windows 10 in VMware player. If you are familiar with VMware, it installed just like any other OS. If you have questions, we will be happy to help.

I installed W10TP on VMware Player and didn't see much difference in functions from a W8TP install on VirtualBox. They are both crap unless you can find drivers for your video hardware that will install. The screens are small and out of proportion. And neither would recognize my TV card.

I did notice one thing I didn't care for with VMP. It installs two network drivers on W7 that load/run all the time--Even when VMP isn't running.

Use the Virtual Network Editor and remove them. They will now be gone.

If you want to use 3D graphics (intensely),use VMware. VirtualBox is limited to 256 MB of graphics memory. You won't get many errors with VMware (VirtualBox sometimes has Guru Meditations,which are critical errors). VMware runs faster,as seen in benchmarks (I can also say it,as I have used both of them).
So,I recommend VMware Player.
If you want the best performance from W10 Preview,install it in the real computer (host).

I have used vBox for many years but there were always some nagging gremlins that I could not get rid of. Then I switched to VMware Player and never had any problems running 6 different Windows and Linux systems. I didn't have a problem with either as far as errors or "gurus". I just don't like the limitations. When I first reviewed W8TP I went with VB because it supported USB and VMP didn't. Now that it does, I tried VMP on W10TP and all I gotta say is that I'll be going back to VB. It has a better system analysis at install and it loads just what it needs. I shouldn't have to run a bunch of maintenance or editors to remove stuff that shouldn't be there in the first place.

When you ask what is the best of anything you will get opinions. These opinions will be colored by the individuals experiences and biases and will not always be rationally based. Both VirtualBox and VMWare have advantages and disadvantages. Most experienced members of this forum appear to favor VMWare.

For me,the best virtualization program is VMware Workstation. It has more features that I find useful. VirtualBox is rubbish. Even if I allocate 256 MB graphics memory in it,Vista wouldn't have Aero available. It gave Guru Meditations sometimes and copy-paste didn't work in older builds of VirtualBox.

Of course,it's up to you which virtualization program to use.

ANSWER: None of the above. You can install W10 TP to a vhd and native dual boot it (provided you have Win7+ boot manager). Doesn't affect your current install at all, and you can delete that vhd file when done testing (or when the preview expires). Nobody needs a hypervisor to test out newer MS OSes anymore...

I hope this will help you install W10 Preview safely. Installing in a VHD removes hibernation from W10,though. BitLocker will only work in the VHD (that is,if you have BitLocker in W10 Preview,it will only work for the VHD). However,it will run much faster than if it was running in VMware or VirtualBox.

Backup your files often,should something go wrong.
