VMware Windows 98 sounds ?

OK I know this is not a Windows 7 question, but - I have recently discovered (rather late in the day) VMware and had loads of fun loading my old OS disks. I can get start-up sounds from Windows 2000 onwards but not from Windows 98 (I also have a '95 disk - did that have a start-up sound ?).

So my question is - is it possible to load '98 (or even '95) sound drivers for whatever virtual sound card VMware uses ? I know the sound is on YouTube, but I would love to hear that start-up sound on my VM.

TIA, as they say.

Hi there
depending on what version of VMware you are using -- version 9 workstation or it's related free VMware player has an option where the sound card uses the sound card of the host which might be a problem for older OS's like Windows 98.

It might be better to use VMware version 8 or even 7 as these can use a "Sound Blaster" type sound card as the emulated virtual sound card which would work OK in Win95 / 98. The modern HD audio might be problematic to virtualize on Win 95/98 especially if you are running an X-64 bit Host -- but it SHOULD work though.

What I've found is switch OFF completely the HOST and then after reboot restart the VM -- ensure VMware tools has been installed though before doing this.

Ensure also that SOUND in the HOST is working and the volume control not turned right down - otherwise the VM will seem that the sound card isn't working.

Cheers

+2. I have Workstation 8 with a Win98 VM and had this issue also. I changed the soundcard to the Sound Blaster generic type, and all is well. Blast to the past :D
