I just noticed that my volume is not as loud as it once was. I used to have my volume set at 12 or 14 and that was plenty loud, now at those levels I can barely here it. I have to crank it up to 25 just to here it normally. So what the heck has happened? I have not messed with or changed any settings and my normal hearing is fine. When I watch TV the volume is at the same setting and hear it just fine. Very strange.

Is the volume problem with the PC speakers or headphones? or both?

If you are using the PC to send HDMI video/audio to a TV that uses the audio from the video card and is separate from the PC audio and the reason it still works OK.

The volume issue is with both the external speakers and headphones. It's like I just lost half my loudness. It used to crank out the volume, now it's about half as loud. The clarity is fine, it's crisp and clear, highs and lows spot on.

As for the TV, I was using that as and example for a volume control test. The TV is separate from my system, it's not connected to it in any way. The volume on the TV is set to 20 and I haven't changed it. This was to make sure that my hearing wasn't or isn't going bad and no doctor visit is needed. I'm just baffled as to what caused this and how to attempt to get it back.

Sometimes, unbeknownst to the user, settings get changed for various reasons. Why don't you go back into all of your sound + volume settings and check them.

Go to Control Panel, Sound (or Hardware + Sound, then Sound), and select Playback
Double-click “Speaker + Dual Headphones” and select Properties, then Advanced, and set the ‘Default Format’ drop-down menu to: 16 bit, 48,000 Hz (DVD quality). You can Test each of the different choices to make sure that’s the loudest.

Then open RealTek HD Audio Manager (or whatever audio manager you have), click on Speakers, and follow on-screen directions.


Then go to Control Panel + open IDT Audio, Playback
Select “Speakers and Dual Headphones” Follow the on-screen directions for Settings, Setup and Equalization.

If the problem isn't there, see if there are newer drivers available to download. That may solve the problem as well.

Ok I've done that and everything is as it should be. I don't have RealTek HD Audio, I have VIA HD Audio. I have the latest driver, I even uninstalled and reinstalled latest driver and still the issue persists. I'm at my wits end here.
