Volume Tracking on for USB drive Restore disable

I'm trying out USB Safely Remove and I see when I try to Stop a USB docking station, it shows me that the Volume Tracking Information service has hold of the drive even though it's not in the list for System Restore Points.

Anyone know how to turn volume tracking on and off? I'm running W7 32 bit build 7077.

The System Volume Information, (Volumne Tracking Information Service) does more then just store Restore Points. It is also where the journaling mechanism is. And various other services. You are probably getting that message because Windows is busy writing the buffer to the drive.

Thanks for the reply. If it's journaling then it's worth it. It doesn't matter how long I let it sit idle, flush with sync.exe from SysInternals, unshare all the folders etc... It just won't let go. Even "stop processes" and "force" with USB Safely Remove has no effect whatsoever no matter how often invoked or when. Guess I'll just have to "wing it" when I figure it's been idle long enough and push the off button on the dock like I've been doing.

How is it setup? File system? Is the removal policy for the drive set as "Quick removal" or "Better performance"? Unfortunate, as far as I can gather some drives are flawed that they never let go and keeping telling the OS they are busy. Don't know why, but I had this problem with my external Western Digital MyBook all the way back in XP.

I dunno'. I guess that driver policy thing you check is a placebo. I have Seagate external drives and this USB docking station with a WD Caviar Black 750 GB. If I check write caching or not, they both act the same. Guess Windows being clever knows you really want the performance no matter what you say!! heh heh

It's no big deal. Others with this docking station say they pull the drive hot with no errors. It just seemed weird that even with USB Safely Remove utility it won't let go.

I'll just run sync.exe and shut the drive power off as I have been doing. I was just curious if I could get this Safely Remove thing to work. Maybe it's only for "real" USB drives and key drives. After all, the WD I'm using is an internal drive and it's not a green drive so it doesn't spin down when idle.
