VPN Help required

I have a Draytek 2820n modem/router set up to accept VPN connections. I have three PC's at home connected to this router. I also have a laptop that I connect wirelessly to it. All are working fine with 100% connections.

Now I want to be able to use the laptop remotely and access my drives when I am away from home. I set the Draytek up to accept VPN connections.
I am using the Draytek SmartVPN Client on the laptop. I took the laptop to my sisters place and connected wirelessly to the internet. All fine so far. I then created a VPN connection to my home router using PPTP and it connected fine and is showing up in the Network control panel. I then tried pinging my PC's at home and all three responded to the pings.

The problem is connecting to the drives. It just will not allow any connections to the drives at all. I even used net use z: \\pcname\e and net use z: \\192.168.0.7\e and it just timed out.

Looking at the properties it says it does not have internet access but there seems no way to enable this.

Any help appreciated for a much frustrated person

Welcome to Seven Forums!

This sounds like a firewall problem somewhere. By some chance have you tried in any other remote locations beside your sister's house?

How does W7 classify the network? Home, Public? Unknown? This relates to how W7 sets the firewall.

Also take a look at the output of the ipconfig all command. Look at the tunnel and see if it has a DNS address assigned.

Do you use Homegroups at all? If not you can disable IPV6 so it doesn't get in the way.

Windows clasified it as a Home after I changed it. Dont use Homegroups and the IPV6 is not enabled for that connection anyway.
It should not need an DNS assigned to it because it is not doing lookups. I am using the IP addresses of the PC's then selves. The ping is going through fine so if the ping goes thru most other things should. The machine at home 2 XP machines and 1 Vista. Windows 7 on the laptop only.

The reason I asked about DNS is I noticed you used the name of a machine in one of your net use commands.

I'm wondering if your sisters router is having some trouble passing either GRE or port 1723 traffic.

W7 does have some sensitivities with wireless routers. You may want to double check the firmware on her router to make sure it's the latest. What make and model is it?

Hi John, so you can actually ping to your PCs at home when abroad?

This is a good sign if you want to connect to the shares. How have you created the shares? Can you give details of what you did.

Well it is actually just several blocks down the road but yes it should work anywhere in the world theoretically. The computers just have normal shares of the drives. Thus from the laptop I should be able to just map to the drive through the VPN as though it was an internal network. It just is not happening.
The VPN tunnel appears to be there and working as evidenced by the responses to the ping. Just can't access the shares.

Ok then what's the error you got? and how did you try connecting to the shares (from where to where etc).

The more tdetails you provide the quicker we can get this solved (i hope).

There error message was that the computer could not be found. There was no error number given. The PC's do not show up in network neighbourhood and I tried mapping the drives as I said in my first message with NET USE. This times out with the computer unable to be found.

What version of W7 are you using? Home, Ultimate? Also, can you map the drive ok at home using the net use command? There's a difference between sharing a drive on a local network vs mapping a drive remotely.

Something else to look at: Is there a way to tell the VPN client NOT to use the default gateway on the remote network? I found some sources that refer to that as one issue that will prevent drives from being mapped.

Ping acurasd, he should be able to help with this VPN issue. I didn't know that you wanted to VPN from abroad.

Yes I can map the drives when it is on the local network. I am using Ultimate version 64bit. I have tried with the client telling it to use the default gateway and not but no difference.

If I try and map the drive using "net use z: \\192.168.0.7\i" the command will time out after quite some time with a System error of 64 which says the network connection is no longer there. Can still ping it though.

To me the routing looks okay with 192.168.0.0 being routed thru 192.168.0.100 which is the VPN link. The 192.168.0.254 is the Vigor 2820n modem/router which is also doing the VPN connection. Looking at its diagnostics the link is correct and active.

Hmm, just for grins, have you tried connecting the VPN while at home? I know it sounds strange but if it connects and you can map drivers at home then it's likely your client setup is ok.

I tried to do that... i did the whole LAN VPN but it will come up with errors.. just for Shittzzss and giggles i had ASE connect to my computer and he did it, the problem is that i dont know what he saw on his end.

I mean for me to test it, i need to test it on a network that not my own.. I need to use a compter outside my own IP address.

I mean i could ask to do it again and we can do a remote desk top cause i know how my server is set up...

but that just seems like alot of work for something i am not getting paid to do *lol*

yeah man i am.. I was reading through this thread and VPN got me intereted so i thought i would try it out for myself and I did...

the only problem is that if you do VPN on your own network, it won't connct, will come up with an error... but also defeatig the point of the VPN

I asked one of myfriends to connect to my server to see if it worked and it did, the problem is that i dont know what happen after that becuase he went off line...but it just seems that the only way for me to see what is going on the HOST computer is use a computer on another connection outside of my own...

I mean i do have a sprint phone and i can pull my internet from them and use my laptop to test the connection and see what goes on...

I mean this is just minor connection... I dont have true hardware for VPN for the VPN firewall/security but it doesn't hurt to just take a gander around you know

Actually you can connect to your own network from the inside. It depends on the VPN server though. I've done it Cisco's VPN for example.

He never mentioned what kind of VPN it is. PPTP or IPSec.

Yep, You cannot connect to the VPN router while you are on the same router. The VPN connection fails every time. I tried that as well.
It makes testing a pain as I have to go to my sisters place as the closest to test anything through it.

It must work as there are many posts saying they have no problems with it.

Me personallly I can actually do it cause I can just use my cell phone becuase it is Windows Mobie 6.1 and grab an IP from sprint.

I never do it cause i dont know when i would ever use it....

What is the benifits of using VPN? Just curious

My cell phone connects as well. But is does not do anything other than that.

The benifets of VPN is that you can connect to your home network and PC's as though you were at home but you can do it from anywhere. Left a file you want on the drive at home then you can simply call in over the VPN and grab it. It is encrypted so no snooping along the way.
