vsync on or off in games

Is it better to turn vsync on or off for gaming, what is your opinion :)

I don't have one really, most of the times I let the game dictate the default options and V-Sync is usually OFF. I only turn it ON if there is something wrong with gameplay and someone said the fix or temporary fix is turning V-Sync ON.

I know there is a simple and logical explanation as to the why you must turn vsync On/off but, alas, I can't remember it LOL

There are pros and cons with vsync you should be aware of. Having vsync on does increase latency concerning the mouse which is bad for fast paced twitch shooters. If that is your type of game.

I personally, run with vsync (adaptive vsync actually) on at all times. The reason for that, I don't play twitch games and my monitor doesn't really like anything over 60fps, lots of tearing. But thats the trade off with large format monitors

V-Sync is used to lock the frame rate according to the refresh rate of your display which is usually 60hz. There are advantages and disadvantages of Turning Off & On vice versa.

Turning on V-Sync Locks the Frame Rate and eliminate most of the Screen Tearing but not completely unless you have a Nvidia's G-Sync Compatible Display but also dips the frame rate straight away to 30fps from 60fps for instance your GPU is capable of running the game at max details and manages to deliver 60fps stable but occasionally at few places where heavy textures and polygons are required to draw and render the frame rate drops few frame from 60 but due to V-Sync ON it will sacrifice 30fps to maintain accordingly to the half of your display's refresh rate.

In order to resolve this issue Nvidia was the first one to step up and introduced Adaptive V-Sync technology to save your gameplay from sacrificing 30fps hit! Adaptive V-Sync is software based thing and by turning it On from the NVCP (Nvidia Control Panel) and turning it Off your In-Game V-Sync off what it actually does is that as soon as your GPU hits the 60fps it locks the frame rate and as soon as the frame rate drops below 60fps it turns off the V-Sync in order to save direct hit of 30fps and maintain your gameplay smoothness. It all happens within the fraction of milliseconds.

Adaptive V-Sync not only saves you from Frame Per Second hit but also improves the Screen Tearing in most cases as well as keeps your GPU temps and power low as running games on complete V-Sync off usually requires most of the power from your GPU to give you highest Frames Per Second in GPU intensive games especially.

Personally I use Adaptive V-Sync all the times. Hope it helps.

Personally I leave VSync on in most games, only in some multiplayer shooters i turn it off as I only have a 60hz monitor. There are pros and cons to both tbh, I mostly play old games, so I cap it at 60fps and the GPU usage mostly stays at 50%.
