W7 64 - Unnable to play imported media files

Hi everyone,

I have a major issue, I had a Pentium 4/2.8 at 32 bit's with XP SP3, and i just bought a new PC (Intel i7-860 / W7 Ultimate 64 / ATI HD 5770 / ASUS P7P55D Pro / 8Gb Ram / Maxtor 500 Gb - 7200 Rpm). It happens that all (no excepcions) the media files (mp2/mp3/aac/wav etc..) i copied from the old PC don't work on the new one! I't says that can not play that file type / unknown file type. I have Shark007 codecs installed for W7-64 and the latest drives both for motherborad / graphics. I moved to 64 bit because i use heavy software (Inventor), but if i can't solve this issue i think i'll be back on 32 bits…
Any help would be welcome,

Hello David, Welcome!
That certainly does not sound like a "bit issue". The only complaint people have against 64-bit is the lack of drivers. You are not experiencing a driver issue.

Now, Windows Media Player will not play mp3s? That really doesn't sound like a driver issue to me. Does it play mp3s that you downloaded on the new machine?

Hate to say this, but it sounds like those files are corrupted. How did you transfer them to your new machine?

I just made a copy from the old hard drive (to cd). And the the files in that cd work just fine in other 32 bit machines. If i read the files directly from cd there´s no problem (?). Only the files copied to the hard drive don't work. I´m using WMP12 and Power DVD9. Some audio files can be read in Nero but not in WMP or PDVD.

Is the CD an Audio CD? IMO, will the CD play in a CD player?

You may want to try another codec pack. I can;t think of any reason why Shark007 wouldn't work; but it's a good idea to verify it as part of the trouble shooting process.

I can recommend Windows 7 Codec Pack. I'm am very happy with it on my 64bit machine.

I all, it´s the same issue. I'll just give up and copy all my cd e dvd to the new pc, i've allready installed all the codecs availlable... If the .mp3 extensions work in other pc's why won't they work in my pc??? Is W7 x64 a dum software? YES IT IS!

Hey buddy, chill. I am sorry you are having a problem, we will get it figured out.

Try downloading an mp3 from the internet. Any mp3 will work, try this one. Just delete it from your machine afterwards, in compliance with the site's TOS.

Lol, okay. Sorry to inform you, your mp3s are corrupted. To verify this, take them to another machine and test them.

Try removing your codec packs. Windows already has most of the codecs you need. Unless you are using Apple or open source (e.g. OGG), you do not need a third-party codec pack.

If the files play from the cd and not from your hard drive it cannot be a codec problem. It would have to be a file structure problem. Download Mediainfo (MediaInfo - Download) to check the structural integrity of the media files that you copied from the cd to your hard drive.

Wait, the above post gave me an idea: the files are corrupting en route from USB to HD. Try transferring another file from the USB drive to your hard drive. Is it readable?

Funny. Try using Teracopy to transfer the mp3s over.

Lets try a different player. I recommend GOM player , please download this and see if it plays your files, this will tell us if the problem is your current player.
